Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- تَحِلَّةَ أَيْمَانِكُمْ: The expiation (kaffarah) that makes permissible for you to break an oath you have sworn, thereby "dissolving" or "untying" it.
- مَوْلَاكُمْ: Your Protector, Helper, and the One Who manages your affairs.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah — in His infinite mercy and wisdom — has made it lawful for you to dissolve your oaths by offering the prescribed expiation (kaffarah). This is a divine concession and a relief, for He knows that human beings may swear an oath in a moment of haste or anger, only to later realize that keeping that oath would bring harm to themselves or others, or that breaking it would be more beneficial and righteous. So He, in His grace, opened the door for you to free yourselves from such obligations by feeding ten needy people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave; and if one cannot afford any of these, then fasting for three days. This is not a punishment but a purification — a means to cleanse your conscience and restore harmony in your life and relationships.
Allah then reassures you: "And Allah is your Mawla" — your Guardian, your Protector, and the One Who takes care of your affairs. He does not leave you in difficulty; rather, He legislates for you what is easy and beneficial. He is Al-'Aleem — the All-Knowing — fully aware of your circumstances, your weaknesses, your strengths, and what truly serves your interests in this world and the next. And He is Al-Hakeem — the All-Wise — in everything He commands and decrees; His laws are never arbitrary, never harsh, and never without profound wisdom.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this religion! A religion that does not corner its followers but opens doors of mercy at every turn. When you make a mistake — even an oath you regret — Allah does not leave you trapped; He gives you a way out, a means of purification, and a chance to draw closer to Him through charity, feeding the poor, or fasting. This is the essence of Islam: a faith of ease, compassion, and practical solutions. So never feel burdened by your errors; instead, turn to your Lord, fulfill the expiation with a sincere heart, and let this act of worship become a bridge between you and Allah — a reminder that His mercy encompasses everything. Indeed, Allah is your Protector, and He knows what is best for you, and His wisdom is beyond all measure.
