Word Meanings:

  • أَرَأَيْتُمْ (ara'aytum): Tell me, inform me — a rhetorical question meant to provoke thought and reflection.
  • أَهْلَكَنِيَ (ahlakani): Causes my death, takes my life, or destroys me.
  • وَمَن مَّعِيَ (wa man ma'iya): Those who are with me — meaning the believers who followed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • رَحِمَنَا (rahimana): Shows us mercy — meaning He spares us and delays our appointed time of death.
  • يُجِيرُ (yujiru): Protects, shields, or grants refuge and safety from harm.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Prophet, say to these disbelievers who wish for your destruction and the end of your mission: "Tell me — if Allah were to take my life and the lives of all the believers who are with me, as you so eagerly desire, or if He were to show us mercy by prolonging our lives and sparing us from His punishment — then who is there that could protect you, O disbelievers, from His painful torment?"

The meaning is profound: The believers, whether they live or die, are in a state of safety and honor. If they are killed, they attain martyrdom and Paradise. If they live, they are under Allah's mercy and protection. Either way, they are winners. But you — the disbelievers — regardless of what happens to the believers, you remain in a state of defiance and sin. So who will save *you* from the punishment that awaits you? Who can shield you from the fire of Hell? No one — not your idols, not your wealth, not your tribes, not your false gods. None can grant you refuge from Allah's justice.

The verse beautifully illustrates that the believers live between fear and hope — fearing Allah's punishment and hoping for His mercy — while the disbelievers, who reject the truth, have no such refuge. Their fate is sealed unless they turn to Allah in repentance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a powerful message for every soul: The believers are not attached to this worldly life. Their happiness is not dependent on living or dying, because they have submitted to Allah. Whether they live or die, they are under His care. But the disbelievers — what do they have? They have no guarantee of safety, no protector against the consequences of their disbelief.

Dear reader, reflect on your own state: Are you among those who are safe under Allah's mercy, or are you among those who have no protector against His punishment? The door of repentance is always open. Come back to your Lord before the inevitable arrives — for on that Day, no one will be able to shield you from His justice except His own mercy, which is attained through faith and righteous deeds. Do not wait until it is too late. Allah is Most Merciful, and He loves those who turn to Him.

📜 Verse 26-30 — Al-Mulk

Say, "The knowledge is only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner."
But when they see it approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."
Say, [O Muhammad], "Have you considered: whether Allah should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"
Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."
Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"
