Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Zulfah (زُلْفَةً): Near, close at hand.
- Sī'at (سِيئَتْ): Became ugly, darkened, and filled with distress and gloom.
- Tadda'ūn (تَدَّعُونَ): You were demanding, calling for, or challenging (i.e., asking for it to be hastened).
Explanation of the Verse:
When the disbelievers see the punishment of Allah drawing near—and on the Day of Resurrection they will actually witness it with their own eyes—their faces will turn dark and ugly, overwhelmed with grief, humiliation, and despair. Every trace of arrogance and mockery will vanish, replaced by utter disgrace. At that moment, the keepers of Hell will say to them, rebuking them: "This is the very punishment you used to challenge for and demand to be hastened in the worldly life. You used to say mockingly, 'O Allah, if this is the truth, then rain down stones upon us or bring us a painful punishment.' Now you see it before your eyes—so taste what you once denied and ridiculed."
A Call to Reflection:
This verse is a profound reminder of the certainty of Allah's promise. The disbelievers in this life, in their arrogance, would challenge the truth and ask for the punishment to come quickly, thinking they would never be resurrected. But on that Day, when they see it with their own eyes, their faces will betray their inner ruin. How different is the state of the believer, whose face will shine with light and joy upon seeing the reward of patience and faith!
Dear reader, do not wait until you see the punishment with your own eyes to believe. The Qur'an has already told you the end of every nation that denied the truth. Allah's promise is true, and His justice is perfect. The wise person is the one who prepares for that Day before it arrives, when faces will either be radiant with the light of faith or darkened by the shadow of disbelief. Choose now, while the door of repentance is still open, and let your face be among those that will shine with the mercy of your Lord on the Day when neither wealth nor children will avail—only a sound heart that turned to Allah in this life.
