Explanation of the Verse:
After the people of Pharaoh stubbornly rejected the signs of Allah and persisted in their arrogance, Allah sent upon them a succession of overwhelming punishments as undeniable proofs of His power and as calls to return to the truth.
First came the flood — a mighty torrent that submerged their lands, destroyed their crops, and entered their very homes, reaching up to their throats. Then came the locusts, which devoured whatever greenery remained, stripping their fields and orchards bare. Following that, the lice or pests finished off what the locusts had left, spoiling their stored grain and causing misery in their daily lives. Then the frogs invaded in astonishing numbers, filling their vessels, contaminating their food, and disturbing their sleep, so that they could not find peace even in their own homes. Finally, the blood appeared in their rivers, wells, and water containers — their water turned into blood, leaving them without a single drop of clean water to drink.
These were not random calamities; they were clear, distinct signs sent one after another, each a miracle that no human power could replicate or prevent. They were meant to shake the hearts of the people and awaken them to the truth brought by Prophet Musa (peace be upon him).
Yet, despite all these overwhelming proofs, the people of Pharaoh grew even more arrogant. They refused to humble themselves before their Lord, rejected faith, and persisted in their transgression. They were a people deeply entrenched in wrongdoing — criminals who would not relent, even when the punishment of Allah was right before their eyes.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, ponder this story deeply. How often do we witness signs of Allah around us — in the turning of the seasons, in the blessings of water and food, in the very breath we take — yet we remain heedless? The people of Pharaoh were given miracle after miracle, yet their hearts grew harder with each one. Let this be a lesson for us: do not wait for calamities to strike before turning back to Allah. The door of repentance is open, and our Lord is Most Merciful, Most Forgiving. He does not punish a people until He has sent them clear guidance, and He does not turn away a sincere heart that seeks Him.
The same Allah who sent these signs is the One who sent the Qur'an as a living guidance for us today. He invites us to know Him, to worship Him, and to taste the sweetness of faith. Do not be like those who saw the truth and still turned away. Be among those who, when they see a sign of Allah, hasten to Him with humility and gratitude. For indeed, success in this life and the next belongs to those who submit to their Lord and follow His messengers.
