Tafsir (Explanation):
When the punishment — the devastating plague — fell upon Pharaoh and his people, and they tasted its crushing weight, their arrogance crumbled. In their desperation, they turned to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and pleaded: "O Musa! Call upon your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you — the covenant of prophethood and the promise that sincere repentance removes affliction. If you lift this punishment from us, we will truly believe in you, follow what you have brought, and we will release the Children of Israel to go with you freely, without hindrance."
This verse captures a profound moment of human weakness and hypocrisy. These were people who had witnessed miracle after miracle — the staff turning into a serpent, the hand shining white, the parting of the sea — yet they only turned to Allah when calamity struck. Their promise was conditional: "If you remove the punishment, then we will believe." Their faith was not born of conviction but of fear and self-interest. They sought to bargain with Allah, offering obedience only in exchange for relief.
Yet, even in this, there is a beautiful lesson for us: Allah's mercy is vast. He sent the punishment not to destroy them outright, but to awaken their hearts. When they cried out to Musa, they acknowledged that Musa had a special station with Allah — a covenant that gave him power in supplication. This teaches us the value of turning to Allah in times of hardship, and the importance of sincere repentance as a means to lift trials.
However, the story also warns us against the disease of conditional faith. How many of us remember Allah only in times of difficulty, and forget Him in times of ease? How many of us make promises to Allah that we break once the storm passes? True faith is steadfast — it does not waver with circumstances. It is constant in gratitude during ease and in patience during hardship.
The verse also highlights the mercy of Allah in sending prophets and messengers as a bridge between Him and His creation. Musa was not just a messenger; he was a means of mercy for even his enemies. When Pharaoh's people cried out, Musa did not refuse them — he was ready to intercede for them, reflecting the noble character of the prophets who seek good even for those who oppose them.
Dear reader, let this verse inspire you to examine your own relationship with Allah. Do you only call upon Him when you are in distress? Or do you remember Him in every moment — in your joy, your success, your daily life? Allah loves the servant who is constant in remembrance, who turns to Him not out of fear alone, but out of love and gratitude. And know that His mercy is greater than any punishment — He is always ready to forgive, to lift burdens, and to guide those who sincerely return to Him.
