Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āyah (آيَةٍ): A sign, miracle, or proof.
- Tasḥaranā (تَسْحَرَنَا): To bewitch or enchant us; to turn us away.
- Muʾminīn (مُؤْمِنِينَ): Believers; those who accept and trust in the truth.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The people of Pharaoh, in their stubborn arrogance, said to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him): "Whatever sign or miracle you bring to us, no matter how convincing, to turn us away from our current beliefs and way of life—we will never believe in you." They openly declared their rejection before even seeing any proof, driven by pride, stubbornness, and blind adherence to their false traditions. They even mockingly called his miracles "sorcery," acknowledging that these signs were powerful enough to sway people, yet they vowed not to be swayed themselves. This was not a reasoned stance but a hardened, prejudiced refusal of the truth, regardless of its clarity.
This verse highlights a profound truth: the heart that is sealed with arrogance and attachment to falsehood will not accept guidance, no matter how brilliant the evidence. The miracles of Moses were clear and undeniable, yet the response was not intellectual inquiry but outright defiance. This is a timeless lesson—faith is not merely a matter of seeing signs; it requires humility, sincerity, and a genuine desire for truth. When the heart is sincere, even the smallest sign can lead to guidance; when it is corrupted by pride, even the greatest miracle becomes a source of mockery.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Do not let pride, habit, or social pressure blind you to the truth. The Qur’an itself is the greatest miracle—a living, eternal sign that calls to reason, heart, and conscience. Approach it with an open heart, and you will find in it the answers your soul seeks. The believers of old accepted the truth with humility and were honored; the rejecters, despite all signs, were left in loss. Choose the path of sincerity, and let your heart be a home for faith, not a fortress of denial. For the One who sent the signs is the Most Merciful, and He opens the doors of guidance to those who knock with truthfulness.
