📖 English Meaning
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except unexpectedly." They ask you as if you are familiar with it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most of the people do not know."

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • As-Sāʿah (الساعة): The Hour – the Day of Judgment.
  • Ayyāna (أيان): When – a question seeking a specific time.
  • Mursāhā (مرساها): Its appointed time – the moment when it will be established and occur.
  • Lā yujallīhā (لا يجليها): He does not reveal or disclose it.
  • Thaqulat (ثقلت): It is heavy and hidden – its knowledge is concealed and weighs heavily upon creation.
  • Baghtah (بغتة): Suddenly – without any prior warning.
  • Hafiyy (حفي): One who is eager, persistent, and well-acquainted with a matter.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelievers of Makkah repeatedly ask you, O Messenger, about the Hour of Judgment, demanding to know its exact timing. They ask as if they expect you to give them a precise date. Allah instructs you to respond clearly: "The knowledge of when it will occur rests solely with my Lord." No angel brought near to Allah, no prophet sent by Him, and no human being has any share in this knowledge. Allah alone has kept this matter exclusively for Himself, and He will not disclose it to anyone at any time. Its knowledge is so heavy and concealed that it overwhelms the heavens and the earth – the angels, the jinn, and all of creation are utterly unaware of when it will strike. It will not come upon you except suddenly, without any prior sign or warning that the moment has arrived.

They ask you about it as if you were eagerly pursuing its knowledge and had already obtained it. But you are not – you are simply a servant of Allah who knows only what He has taught you. So repeat to them with certainty: "The knowledge of the Hour is with Allah alone." Yet most people do not realize this truth. They assume that perhaps some human being, some scholar, or some astrologer might know when the world will end. But this is a grave misconception. Allah has veiled this knowledge from all of His creation, and no one – not even the greatest of prophets – has been granted access to it.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. The fact that Allah has kept the knowledge of the Hour hidden from all of creation is a sign of His infinite wisdom and mercy. If we knew exactly when the world would end, we might procrastinate in our obedience or despair in our worship. Instead, Allah has left it unknown so that we may remain in a state of constant readiness – always turning to Him in repentance, always striving in good deeds, and always preparing for that inevitable meeting with our Lord.

The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the Hour, and he was commanded to refer the matter entirely to Allah. This teaches us humility – to recognize the limits of human knowledge and to submit fully to the sovereignty of Allah. When you realize that the Hour can come at any moment, you will treasure every prayer, every act of kindness, and every moment of remembrance of Allah. Do not waste your life chasing after what is hidden; instead, invest your time in what is certain – your faith, your character, and your relationship with your Creator.

Let this verse awaken your heart. The Hour is nearer to you than you think. It may come while you are in the middle of your daily routine, while you are laughing with friends, or while you are alone in your room. Be prepared. Let your heart be attached to Allah, and let your deeds speak for you. For on that Day, no soul will be asked about the timing of the Hour – rather, every soul will be asked about how it lived its life in preparation for it.

📜 Verse 185-189 — Al-A'raf

Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement hereafter will they believe?
Whoever Allah sends astray - there is no guide for him. And He leaves them in their transgression, wandering blindly.
Say, "I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe."
It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord, "If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful."
