Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Ghayb (الغيب): The unseen, that which is hidden from human perception and knowledge, including future events and matters known only to Allah.
- Nadheer (نذير): A warner who cautions people against the consequences of disbelief and sin.
- Basheer (بشير): A bearer of glad tidings who announces the reward and mercy of Allah to the believers.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare clearly to all people: "I do not possess the power to bring benefit to myself or to ward off harm from myself, except what Allah wills." This is a profound statement of humility and complete reliance on Allah alone. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is not a deity, nor does he have independent control over his own affairs—let alone the affairs of others. All power, all benefit, and all harm are in the Hands of Allah, the Almighty, and whatever He wills occurs, and whatever He does not will does not occur.
The verse continues: "And if I had knowledge of the unseen, I would have acquired much good, and no harm would have touched me." This means that if the Prophet (peace be upon him) had knowledge of what is hidden—such as future events, times of abundance or scarcity, and what lies ahead—he would have taken the means to secure abundant good for himself and to avoid every hardship and misfortune. However, he does not possess such knowledge, because the unseen belongs exclusively to Allah. This serves as a powerful lesson for humanity: no one, not even the best of creation, knows the unseen except what Allah reveals to him. Therefore, people should not chase after fortune-tellers, soothsayers, or those who claim knowledge of the future, for such claims are false and misleading.
Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) defines his true role: "I am only a warner and a bearer of glad tidings for a people who believe." He is a warner—warning those who disbelieve and persist in sin about the painful punishment of Allah in the Hereafter—and a bearer of glad tidings—announcing the eternal bliss of Paradise to those who believe in his message and act upon it. His mission is clear, his message is pure, and his call is one of mercy and guidance for all of humanity.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a beautiful and essential lesson for every Muslim. It teaches us the purity of Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah)—that all affairs are in Allah's Hands, and that even the Prophet (peace be upon him), the most beloved of creation to Allah, does not possess independent power or knowledge of the unseen. This should draw our hearts closer to Allah, making us turn to Him alone in times of need and difficulty, and protecting us from attaching our hopes to created beings or false claims of hidden knowledge.
Moreover, the verse instills in us a spirit of trust and reliance upon Allah. When we face hardship, we know that it is from Allah, and when we enjoy ease, it is from His grace. Our duty is to strive, to work with the means available to us, and to leave the results to Allah. And just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was a warner and a bearer of glad tidings, we too should carry this message to others—calling them to the path of Allah with wisdom and beautiful preaching, warning them of the consequences of sin, and giving them hope in the mercy and reward of Allah.
So, dear reader, let this verse be a reminder that your life is in the Hands of the Most Merciful. Turn to Him, trust in Him, and follow the guidance He sent through His noble Messenger. That is the path to true success in this life and the Hereafter.
