📖 English Meaning
Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • قُمِ (Qum): Stand up, meaning to rise and devote oneself to prayer and worship.
  • اللَّيْلَ (Al-Layl): The night, referring to the hours of darkness after the evening prayer until dawn.
  • إِلَّا قَلِيلًا (Illa Qalilan): Except a little, meaning a small portion of the night is exempted from this command.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, the believing community — commanding him to stand in prayer during the night, but with a merciful exception: a small portion of the night is excluded from this obligation. The command here is to rise from sleep and dedicate oneself to worship, specifically the night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl), which was initially made an obligatory act for the Prophet and his followers before it was later lightened.

The verse indicates that the believer should spend the greater part of the night in prayer, yet Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, does not demand the entire night. Instead, He allows a little rest and respite. This reflects the divine balance between devotion and human physical limitation — Allah knows that His servants have bodies that need rest and families and daily responsibilities. The command is not to exhaust oneself beyond capacity, but to strive sincerely in worship while acknowledging human frailty.

In the early period of Islam, this night prayer was a strict obligation, as mentioned in the context of this chapter. It was a means of spiritual training for the Prophet and his companions, strengthening their connection with Allah, purifying their souls, and preparing them for the heavy responsibility of conveying the divine message. The night is a time of tranquility, when distractions are minimal and the heart can focus entirely on its Creator.

A Call to the Believers:

Dear Muslim, this verse carries a profound lesson for you. The night prayer is one of the greatest acts of worship that brings you closer to Allah, elevates your rank, and erases your sins. Even though it is no longer obligatory upon you as it was upon the early believers, it remains a highly recommended and beloved act to Allah. Imagine standing before your Lord in the depths of the night, while the world sleeps, whispering your needs and seeking His forgiveness — what a beautiful moment of intimacy with the Creator!

Do not let the busyness of life deprive you of this treasure. Even a small portion of the night — two rak'ahs before Fajr, or a few minutes of supplication and Quran recitation — can transform your heart and illuminate your day. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The closest a servant is to his Lord is during the last part of the night, so if you can be among those who remember Allah at that hour, then do so." (Tirmidhi)

Allah has made this worship easy for you — He does not require the entire night, only what you can manage with sincerity. So begin with a little, be consistent, and watch how your faith grows, your worries fade, and your connection with Allah deepens. This is the path of the righteous, the way of the Prophet, and the key to inner peace and success in this life and the Hereafter.
