Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Nisfahu (نصفه): Half of it — referring to half of the night.
  • Aw (أو): Or — indicating a choice between options.
  • Unqus minhu (انقُص منه): Decrease from it — i.e., reduce the amount of time spent in prayer.
  • Qalilan (قليلاً): A little — a small reduction, bringing the total to about one-third of the night.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah commanded His beloved Messenger ﷺ to stand in prayer during the night, He then clarified the exact measure of that standing. The verse says: "Half of it" — meaning you may pray for half the night, O Prophet. Then Allah adds: "Or decrease from it a little" — that is, you may reduce that half by a small amount, bringing it down to approximately one-third of the night. This was a divine facilitation, giving the Prophet ﷺ and the believers a flexible range: they could choose to pray half the night, or slightly less, without hardship. The command was not rigid but merciful, allowing the worshipper to adjust according to their strength and circumstances. This flexibility reflects Allah’s profound care for His servants, as He knows human limitations and never burdens a soul beyond its capacity. The night prayer, even in its minimal form, is a powerful means of drawing closer to Allah, purifying the heart, and strengthening one’s connection to the Qur’an, which the following verses go on to emphasize.

A Da’wah Reflection:

Dear believer, see how your Lord, in His infinite mercy, does not demand from you what is beyond your ability. He gives you choices — half the night, or a little less — so that your worship remains a source of joy, not a cause of exhaustion. This is the beauty of Islam: a religion of balance and ease. When you stand in the stillness of the night, even for a short while, you are answering your Creator’s call, and He promises to reward you beyond measure. Do not let the busyness of life deprive you of this treasure. Start small — even a few minutes of night prayer and recitation of the Qur’an can transform your heart, illuminate your path, and bring you peace that no worldly comfort can match. Allah is not in need of your prayer; rather, it is you who are in need of His mercy, His guidance, and His closeness. So seize this opportunity, and let the night be your companion on the road to Paradise.

📜 Verse 1-5 — Al-Muzzammil

O you who wraps himself [in clothing],
Arise [to pray] the night, except for a little -
Half of it - or subtract from it a little
Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.
Indeed, We will cast upon you a heavy word.
