Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "An yataqaddama" — to advance or move forward, meaning to hasten towards goodness, faith, and obedience.
  • "Aw yata'akhkhara" — to lag behind or fall back, meaning to turn away towards disbelief, sin, and disobedience.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a powerful conclusion to a solemn oath in which Allah Almighty swears by the moon, by the night as it departs, and by the dawn as it brightens — all as evidence that the Fire of Hell is truly one of the greatest calamities, a warning and a deterrent for humanity.

The verse then declares that this warning is "for whoever among you wishes to advance or fall behind." This means that the message of the Qur'an and the warning of the Hereafter are not forced upon anyone; rather, they are presented clearly so that every person may make their own choice. Whoever wishes may advance — by embracing faith in Allah, performing righteous deeds, and racing towards His pleasure. And whoever wishes may fall behind — by persisting in disbelief, sin, and disobedience.

This is both an invitation and a stern warning. It places the responsibility squarely on each individual: the path is open, the truth is clear, and the choice is yours. Allah does not compel anyone; He shows the way and lets you decide your destiny.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the magnificence of this divine address. Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, has placed the decision in your hands. He has not left you without guidance — He has sent His messengers, revealed His books, and made the truth as clear as the dawn that breaks after the night.

The choice between advancing towards eternal bliss and falling behind into everlasting loss is yours alone. No one can make it for you. Every prayer you offer, every good deed you perform, every sin you avoid — these are steps forward on a path that leads to gardens beneath which rivers flow. And every negligence, every transgression, every moment spent in disobedience — these are steps backward towards a fire whose fuel is men and stones.

Do not delay. Tomorrow may never come. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death."

So advance today — with sincerity, with repentance, with love for your Creator. The door of mercy is wide open, and Allah calls you to Him. Will you answer the call and move forward, or will you turn away and fall behind? The choice, dear soul, is yours.
