Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Yuqimoona al-Salah (يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ): They establish the prayer — meaning they perform it perfectly and consistently, fulfilling all its conditions, pillars, and obligations, at its prescribed times.
  • Mimma razaqnahum (وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ): From what We have provided for them — referring to the wealth, sustenance, and provisions that Allah has granted them.
  • Yunfiqoon (يُنفِقُونَ): They spend — meaning they give out from their wealth in charity, both the obligatory (like Zakat) and the voluntary (like Sadaqah), in the ways Allah has commanded.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

After describing the believers as those whose hearts tremble with awe when Allah is mentioned, and whose faith increases when His verses are recited to them, and who put their complete trust in their Lord, Allah now describes two more of their defining qualities.

The first quality is that they establish the prayer. This is not merely performing the prayer in a rushed or careless manner. Rather, it means they guard it diligently, performing it at its appointed times with full devotion — standing, bowing, and prostrating — completing all its essential elements and perfecting its outward forms and inner humility. They do not neglect it for business, work, or any worldly distraction. The prayer is the pillar of their faith, the connection between the servant and his Lord, and the first deed for which a person will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment.

The second quality is that they spend from what Allah has provided for them. They recognize that all wealth, property, and provisions ultimately belong to Allah, and that they are merely trustees over these blessings. Therefore, they willingly give out from their sustenance — both the obligatory charity (Zakat) that purifies their wealth, and the voluntary charity that increases their reward. They spend on their families, on the poor and needy, on orphans and travelers, and in all the ways that please Allah. They do not hoard their wealth selfishly, nor do they fear poverty when they give, for they know that Allah is the Provider and that whatever they spend in His cause will be repaid manifold.

These two qualities — prayer and spending — are intertwined. Prayer purifies the soul and connects it to the Creator, while spending purifies the wealth and connects the believer to the creation. Together, they complete the believer's worship: the vertical relationship with Allah through prayer, and the horizontal relationship with humanity through charity.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear believer, look at these beautiful qualities that Allah describes for His true servants. They are not merely theoretical ideals — they are practical, achievable actions that bring you closer to your Lord and elevate your rank in this life and the next. When you stand in prayer, you are speaking directly to your Creator, the Most Merciful, who listens to you and responds. When you give in charity, you are planting seeds of goodness that will bloom for you on the Day when no wealth or children will avail, except one who comes to Allah with a pure heart.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity." (Ahmad). So let your prayer be your fortress, and your spending be your investment in the Hereafter. These are the qualities of those who will inherit Paradise — those who will be among the successful, the guided, and the beloved of Allah.

May Allah make us among those who establish their prayers and spend from what He has provided — for indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, and the Most Generous.

📜 Verse 1-5 — Al-Anfal

They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger." So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -
The ones who establish prayer, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.
[It is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of Badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,
