Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Bimā qaddamat aydīkum" — "Because of what your hands have sent forth" — meaning, because of the deeds you have earned and committed with your own free will.
  • "Bi-ẓallām" — "Unjust" — this form in Arabic (the intensive pattern) emphasizes that Allah is not unjust to anyone in the slightest degree, not even the weight of an atom.

The Interpretation:

This verse addresses the disbelievers who faced punishment and torment — whether at the moment of death, in the grave, or in the Hereafter — and it declares that this punishment is not an act of oppression or arbitrary cruelty from Allah. Rather, it is the direct and just consequence of what their own hands have sent forth in this worldly life: their disbelief, their sins, their oppression of the believers, and their persistent rejection of the truth.

Allah, the Most High, is the ultimate Judge whose justice is absolute and perfect. He does not wrong any of His servants — not even by the weight of a mustard seed. He does not punish anyone except for what they have earned through their own choices and actions. If a person receives punishment, it is because they have sown the seeds of that punishment with their own hands. If a person receives mercy, it is purely from Allah's grace and bounty.

This verse carries a profound message of divine justice: Allah does not begin with punishing His servants, nor does He punish them without cause. Rather, He is the All-Wise, the All-Just, who establishes justice among His creation and rewards or punishes based on what each soul has earned.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. It teaches us that we are fully responsible for our actions — we are not victims of fate, nor are we oppressed by an unjust deity. Every hardship that befalls us due to our sins is a reminder to return to Allah, to purify our hearts, and to correct our ways. At the same time, this verse fills the believer's heart with hope and security: our Lord is not a tyrant who delights in punishing His servants. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate, who opens the door of repentance to all who turn to Him sincerely.

So let us examine our own hands — what have they sent forth? Let us hasten to good deeds, seek forgiveness for our shortcomings, and trust in the perfect justice of our Lord, knowing that He never wrongs anyone, and that His mercy encompasses all things.

📜 Verse 49-53 — Al-Anfal

[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allah - then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.
And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved... They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allah is not ever unjust to His servants."
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty.
That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
