Word Meanings:

  • كَدَأْبِ (ka-da'bi): Like the custom, habit, or way of dealing — referring to the established pattern of punishment.
  • آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ (aali Fir'awn): The people and followers of Pharaoh.
  • فَأَخَذَهُمُ (fa-akhadhahum): So He seized them — meaning He punished them with a decisive, overpowering grip.
  • شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ (shadeed al-'iqab): Severe in punishment — One whose retribution is mighty and inescapable.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse draws a profound and sobering parallel between the fate of the disbelievers at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the fate of the tyrants who came before them. It tells us that what befell the Quraysh and other polytheists on the Day of Badr was not an isolated event, but rather a manifestation of Allah's unchanging and universal law — the same law that was applied to the people of Pharaoh and the nations that preceded them.

Those earlier peoples, despite their power, wealth, and armies, rejected the signs of Allah. They denied His messengers, mocked His revelations, and persisted in their arrogance. So Allah seized them with a punishment that was both swift and decisive — not because He wronged them, but because of their own sins and transgressions. Their strength could not protect them, and their numbers could not save them from the consequences of their disbelief.

The verse concludes with a powerful reminder: "Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Severe in punishment." This is not merely a statement of fact, but a warning and a lesson. Allah's power is absolute — no one can overcome Him, and no one can shield another from His justice. His punishment is severe for those who persist in sin and reject His guidance, yet His mercy remains open to those who turn back to Him in sincere repentance.

A Call to Reflection:

Beloved reader, this verse carries a timeless message for every generation. It reminds us that no matter how advanced, powerful, or self-sufficient a society may become, it can never escape the watchful eye of its Creator. The stories of Pharaoh and the nations of old are not mere legends — they are historical testimonies preserved in the Qur'an so that we may learn and take heed.

But here is the beautiful part: Allah does not hasten to punish. He gives chances, extends time, and opens the door of repentance again and again. The very fact that you are reading these words today is a sign of His mercy — an invitation for you to reflect, to return, and to align your life with His guidance. Do not let the arrogance of power or the distractions of this world distance you from the One who holds everything in His hands. Embrace His message, and you will find a peace and protection that no earthly power can provide.

📜 Verse 50-54 — Al-Anfal

And if you could but see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved... They are striking their faces and their backs and [saying], "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.
That is for what your hands have put forth [of evil] and because Allah is not ever unjust to His servants."
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They disbelieved in the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty.
That is because Allah would not change a favor which He had bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. And indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and of those before them. They denied the signs of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all [of them] were wrongdoers.
