Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Qamar – The moon.
- Ittaṣaqa – When it becomes full and complete, reaching its peak of light and perfection (the full moon, specifically on the nights of the white days – the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the lunar month).
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) swears by the moon when it reaches its full maturity and completeness—when its light is perfected and it shines in its most beautiful and balanced form. This is a magnificent oath from the Creator, drawing our attention to the precision and harmony of His cosmic signs. The moon, which waxes and wanes in a perfect, unerring cycle, is a living testament to Allah’s absolute power and wisdom. Just as the moon completes its phases, so too does human life pass through divinely ordained stages—from a drop of fluid, to a clinging clot, to a lump of flesh, to the breathing of the soul, then to death, and finally to resurrection and judgment. The oath here serves to affirm the certainty of these stages and the truth of the Hereafter.
Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the moon that you see in the night sky. It does not stray from its path, nor does it fail to complete its cycle. It is a sign of Allah’s perfect order—a sign that points to a Creator who never errs and never forgets. If He can perfect the moon’s light, then He can certainly perfect His justice and bring you back to life for accountability. Let this verse fill your heart with awe and hope: awe of the One who controls the heavens, and hope that your journey is not random, but purposeful, leading to a meeting with your Lord. Embrace Islam’s call to submit to this perfect Creator, and let the moon’s fullness remind you to complete your own faith—seeking His mercy, obeying His commands, and preparing for the day when your deeds will be weighed. Indeed, the One who swore by the moon is the Most Truthful, and His promise is certain.
