Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Layl (اللَّيْلِ): The night.
- Ma Wasaq (مَا وَسَقَ): What it gathers, collects, or brings together. This refers to all creatures that return to their shelters, dens, or resting places when night falls, seeking refuge in the darkness.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) takes an oath by the night and by everything it gathers and envelops within its shadows. When the night descends, all living beings—whether beasts, insects, birds, or even humans—return to their homes and places of rest. The stillness of the night brings together what was scattered during the day; every creature seeks its abode, and the world settles into a profound calm. This is a sign of Allah’s perfect order and wisdom, as He has instilled in all creation the instinct to find peace and security in the night.
This oath is part of a series of divine oaths in this chapter, where Allah swears by the redness of the sky at sunset, by the night and what it gathers, and by the moon when it becomes full—all pointing to the certainty of the resurrection and the different stages of human existence. Just as the night gathers all creatures to their resting places, so too will Allah gather all of humanity on the Day of Judgment. The verse serves as a reminder that the One who perfectly manages the cycle of day and night, and who gives every creature its place and time, is certainly capable of bringing the dead back to life and holding every soul accountable for its deeds.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the night that surrounds you. Have you ever noticed how, as darkness falls, the world grows quiet, and every living thing retreats to its shelter? This is not a random occurrence—it is the handiwork of the Most Merciful, who has made the night a time of rest and tranquility for His creation. The same Lord who commands the night to gather all creatures under its wing is the One who will gather you on a Day when no soul will be wronged. Let this verse fill your heart with awe and gratitude. Turn to your Creator, who has given you the night to rest and the day to strive, and know that His promise of resurrection is as certain as the coming of the night after the day. Embrace Islam with a sincere heart, for it is the path that leads to peace in this life and success in the Hereafter.
