Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَتَرْكَبُنَّ (latarkabunna): You will surely pass through or traverse — a strong oath-affirmed statement indicating certainty.
- طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍ (tabaqan 'an tabaqin): Layer upon layer, stage after stage, or one state after another — signifying successive phases and conditions.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Exalted, opens this chapter with a series of powerful oaths — by the redness of the sky at sunset, by the night and all that it gathers, and by the moon when it reaches its full light — to affirm a profound truth that every human being must internalize: you shall surely journey from one stage to another, from one condition to the next, without exception.
This verse addresses all of humanity: O people, you are not created in vain, nor are you left without purpose. Rather, you are traveling a path of transformation that begins with a mere drop of fluid, then becomes a clinging clot, then a lump of flesh, then bones clothed with muscle, then the soul is breathed in, and you emerge into this world. From there, you pass through the stages of childhood, youth, and old age; then comes death, the grave, resurrection, the gathering, the reckoning, and finally the crossing of the Bridge (Sirat) — leading either to eternal bliss or to a painful end.
This is not a random or meaningless journey. Each stage is a sign of Allah's wisdom and power, and each transition brings you closer to the ultimate meeting with your Lord. Just as you have witnessed how Allah transforms you from one state to another in this world, know with certainty that He is fully capable of transforming you again in the Hereafter — from death to life, from the grave to the gathering.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound reality. You are constantly moving — there is no standing still. Every breath, every heartbeat, every passing day is a step in this journey. The question is not *whether* you will move from stage to stage, but *how* you will move: with awareness and preparation, or with heedlessness and neglect?
This verse is a loving reminder from your Creator, who does not want you to be surprised on the Day of Judgment. He has told you clearly: you will face death, you will be resurrected, you will be held accountable. So prepare for that day while you still have time. Turn to Allah in repentance, perform good deeds, and treat others with kindness and justice. The stages are many, but the destination is one — and you have the power to make it a beautiful one.
Let this certainty fill your heart with hope and motivation, not fear and despair. For the same Allah who takes you through these stages is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving. He has opened the door of repentance wide, and He accepts those who turn to Him at any stage of their journey. So begin today — for tomorrow may be a new stage, and you do not know which one it will be.
