Cursed were the companions of the trench
📜

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Qutila (قُتِلَ): Here it means "cursed" or "destroyed," as a supplication of punishment upon them.
  • As-hab (أَصْحَابُ): The companions or people associated with something.
  • Al-Ukhdood (الأُخْدُود): A deep trench or ditch dug in the earth, long and wide, like a canal or a pit.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse declares a divine curse and destruction upon "the people of the trench" (As-hab al-Ukhdood). These were tyrants who dug a massive trench in the ground, filled it with blazing fire, and threw believing men and women into it simply because they refused to renounce their faith in Allah. The word "Qutila" here is not just a statement of their past destruction but a permanent curse—an announcement that Allah's wrath has fallen upon them, and they are removed from all good.

The story behind this verse is one of the most harrowing tales of persecution in history. A tyrannical king demanded that his people worship him instead of Allah. When a young believer stood firm in his faith, the king subjected him to torture, and eventually, the believers were gathered and cast into a fiery trench. They were given a choice: renounce their faith or be burned alive. They chose the fire over disbelief, and their steadfastness became a timeless testimony to the power of sincere faith.

This verse serves as a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that the path of faith has always been paved with trials, and the enemies of truth will go to any length to extinguish the light of belief. Yet, their efforts are doomed to failure, for Allah's curse follows them, and His promise of victory for the believers is certain. The people of the trench gained nothing but disgrace in this world and the next, while the believers they tortured earned eternal honor and Paradise.

For us today, this verse is a call to reflect on our own steadfastness. How firm are we in our faith when faced with pressure, mockery, or hardship? The believers of the trench did not waver even when death by fire was before their eyes. Their sacrifice was not in vain—it became a beacon of courage for all generations. Let us draw strength from their example, knowing that Allah sees every sacrifice, every tear, and every act of patience. He never abandons His sincere servants, and His justice is absolute. The curse upon the oppressors is a guarantee that no tyrant, no matter how powerful, will escape His reckoning. And for the believers, there is always the promise of eternal bliss in gardens beneath which rivers flow—a reward far greater than anything this world can offer.
