Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- النَّارِ (An-Nar): The fire.
- ذَاتِ (Dhat): Owner of, or possessing.
- الْوَقُودِ (Al-Waqud): Fuel — that which is used to feed and intensify a fire, such as wood, coal, or oil.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse continues the description of the cursed people who dug a great trench in the earth to persecute the believers. They did not merely light an ordinary fire — they kindled a fierce, blazing inferno, well-supplied with abundant fuel to keep it raging and burning at its maximum intensity. The mention of fuel highlights the cruelty and determination of these tyrants: they prepared everything necessary to inflict the most severe and prolonged torment upon the believers.
These oppressors sat around the edge of the trench, watching the horrific scene unfold before their eyes. They were present and fully aware of what they were doing — witnessing the believers being thrown alive into the flames. Their only crime against these innocent souls was that they believed in Allah, the Almighty, the Praiseworthy — the One whose power cannot be overcome and whose perfection is manifest in all His names, attributes, and actions.
This scene serves as a powerful reminder of the eternal struggle between truth and falsehood throughout history. The oppressors may have had temporary power in this world, but their cruelty is recorded, and their ultimate fate is sealed. Meanwhile, the believers who endured such trials are promised a reward that far surpasses any suffering they endured — gardens beneath which rivers flow, in the presence of the Most High.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, contemplate the profound lesson in this verse. The tyrants of history invested their energy, resources, and effort into extinguishing the light of faith — yet faith survived, and their cruelty became a timeless lesson for humanity. This teaches us that no matter how fierce the fire of oppression may burn, it can never extinguish the light of truth in sincere hearts.
If you find yourself facing trials for your faith, take heart. The believers who came before you faced far worse — yet they remained steadfast, and Allah honored them with the ultimate victory. And if you are among those who have not yet embraced this beautiful faith, know that Islam is the religion that has survived every attempt to destroy it, because it is protected by the One who created the heavens and the earth, and who witnesses everything.
The fire of this world, no matter how intense, is temporary. But the fire of the Hereafter is eternal — and so too is the bliss of Paradise. Choose wisely, for your choice today determines your eternity tomorrow.
