Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shahid (شَاهِدٍ): A witness — one who observes, testifies, or is present. Interpretations include the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a witness over his nation, the day of Jumu‘ah (Friday) as a witness over deeds, or angels witnessing events.
  • Mashhud (مَشْهُودٍ): That which is witnessed — the community being testified over, the Day of ‘Arafah witnessed by the gathering of pilgrims and angels, or the Day of Resurrection witnessed by all creation.

Explanation of the Verse:

After swearing by the sky with its great orbits and by the promised Day of Judgment, Allah continues His solemn oath, saying: *"And by every witness and that which is witnessed."*

This encompasses all forms of witnessing — the prophets who bear witness to their nations, the angels who record and observe deeds, the days that stand as silent witnesses to human actions, and the communities and events that are witnessed. Among the most significant examples are Friday, which witnesses the deeds of every worker, and the Day of ‘Arafah, when pilgrims gather and the angels attend, testifying to the devotion of the worshippers.

The oath itself draws attention to the profound reality that nothing escapes observation. Every soul, every action, every moment is either a witness or is witnessed. This prepares the heart for the weight of what follows — the mention of those who tortured the believers, knowing full well that their cruelty was seen, recorded, and will be accounted for.

Allah swears by whatever He wills of His creation to emphasize the certainty of His message. As for the creation, none may swear by other than Allah, for swearing by other than Him is a form of shirk — associating partners with the Almighty.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and consider: you are never alone. Every breath you take, every word you speak, every deed you do — there is a witness. The angels on your right and left record, the earth bears testimony, and your own limbs will speak on the Day when nothing remains hidden. This is not to frighten you, but to awaken you to the beautiful reality that your Lord sees your efforts, your struggles, and your sincere worship. When you stand in prayer, when you give in charity, when you restrain your anger for His sake — know that the Witness is also the Most Merciful. He sees your good deeds and will reward them in ways you cannot imagine. Let this awareness fill you with hope and motivation to live a life pleasing to Him, for the One who witnesses all is the One who loves to forgive, reward, and elevate His sincere servants.
