Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse paints a beautiful and complete picture of the believing community—both men and women—and the bond that unites them. Allah declares that the believers, male and female, are guardians and allies of one another. This is not merely a casual friendship; it is a deep, spiritual bond of loyalty, love, and mutual support rooted in shared faith. They stand by each other in times of ease and hardship, guiding and protecting one another on the path of righteousness.
The first manifestation of this alliance is that they enjoin what is good—calling one another to faith, sincere worship, honesty, kindness, and every act that draws a person closer to Allah. At the same time, they forbid what is evil—warning against sin, disbelief, injustice, and every deed that leads to ruin in this life and the Hereafter. This is the duty of sincere brotherhood: to be a source of guidance, not merely a companion in worldly affairs.
Their faith is not just words; it is reflected in action. They establish the prayer, which is the pillar of the religion and the direct connection between the servant and his Lord. They give the Zakaah, purifying their wealth and supporting the needy, thereby strengthening the social fabric of the community. And above all, they obey Allah and His Messenger in all matters of life—submitting their will to the Divine command and following the prophetic example in every affair, whether great or small.
Because of these noble qualities, Allah promises them His mercy. The verse uses the emphatic form "سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ" (He will surely have mercy on them), indicating that this mercy is certain and guaranteed. This mercy will save them from His punishment and admit them into His eternal Paradise. And why should they not hope for this? For Allah is Almighty (Azeez)—nothing can prevent His mercy from reaching them—and All-Wise (Hakeem)—He places everything in its proper place, rewarding those who deserve His grace.
A Call to the Reader:
Dear believer, look at the beauty of this verse! It tells you that you are never alone. You are part of a great family of faith—men and women who are allies, supporters, and protectors of one another. When you enjoin good and forbid evil, you are not just fulfilling a duty; you are building a community that Allah Himself praises. When you pray and give Zakaah, you are strengthening your bond with your Creator and with your fellow human beings. And when you obey Allah and His Messenger, you are walking the path that leads directly to His mercy.
So hold fast to this brotherhood and sisterhood of faith. Be a source of good for others, and accept good from them. Let your life be a living example of these beautiful qualities. And rest assured that the promise of Allah is true: His mercy is near, His power is unmatched, and His wisdom is perfect. Strive to be among those described in this verse, and you will surely taste the sweetness of faith in this world and the joy of His mercy in the Hereafter.
