Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Hill" (حِلٌّ): This word carries two possible meanings here. First, it can mean "lawful" or "permissible" — that whatever the Prophet ﷺ does in this city is allowed for him. Second, it can mean "dwelling" or "residing" — that he is a resident of this city.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Allah swore by the sacred city of Makkah in the previous verse, He now addresses His beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ directly, saying: "And you are free from restriction in this city."

This verse carries profound meanings. The Prophet ﷺ was born in Makkah, lived there, and was residing in it at the time this verse was revealed. Some scholars interpret "hill" here as meaning that the Prophet ﷺ was granted special permission to fight and take action against those who deserved punishment in Makkah — something that was not permitted for others, as the city was a sanctuary where bloodshed was forbidden. This was a unique privilege given to the Prophet ﷺ during the conquest of Makkah, when he was allowed to subdue the enemies of Islam who had persecuted the Muslims for years.

Another interpretation suggests that the verse simply affirms the Prophet's presence in Makkah, highlighting the honor and sanctity of the city through its connection to him. The city of Makkah was already sacred, but its sanctity was elevated further by the presence of the Final Messenger ﷺ within its boundaries.

This verse beautifully illustrates Allah's special regard for His Prophet ﷺ. The Creator of the heavens and the earth swears by a city, and then addresses His Messenger directly, acknowledging his residence there. It is a moment of divine intimacy and honor — a reminder that when a righteous servant of Allah dwells in a place, that place is blessed by their presence.

For us as believers, this verse teaches us the immense value of sacred places and sacred times, and how Allah honors those whom He loves. It also reminds us of the unique status of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was given permissions and privileges that no other prophet or person was given. His connection to Makkah — the city of his birth, his prophethood, and his eventual triumph — is a testament to Allah's plan and wisdom.

Let this verse inspire us to love and respect the sacred city of Makkah, and to honor the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ who lived and struggled there. And let us remember that Allah's favor upon His chosen servants knows no bounds — He elevates them, honors them, and grants them what no others receive. May we strive to be among those whom Allah loves and honors, and may we always cherish the blessed places and moments that bring us closer to Him.
