Word Meanings:
- "لَا" (Lā): Here, it is an introductory particle used for emphasis, not a negation. It serves to draw attention and affirm the solemnity of the oath that follows.
- "أُقْسِمُ" (Uqsimu): I swear or take an oath.
- "بِهَذَا الْبَلَدِ" (Bihādhā al-Balad): By this city or land—referring specifically to the sacred city of Makkah (Mecca).
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah—the Most High—opens this chapter with a powerful and solemn oath, swearing by the sacred city of Makkah, the honored land where the Holy Kaaba stands. This is the very city that holds unparalleled sanctity in Islam, the birthplace of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the direction of prayer (qiblah) for all Muslims worldwide. The use of "لَا" at the beginning is not to deny, but rather to emphasize the greatness of this oath, as if to say: "Indeed, I swear by this blessed land!"
This oath highlights the immense honor and virtue of Makkah, a place chosen by Allah Himself as a sanctuary of peace and security. It is a reminder to humanity of the sacredness of this city and its central role in the divine plan. By swearing by it, Allah draws our attention to the profound significance of this location, urging us to reflect on its history, its blessings, and its connection to the message of Islam.
As believers, this verse instills in us a deep love and reverence for Makkah, inspiring us to cherish its sanctity, honor its rituals, and recognize the mercy of Allah in granting us such a blessed place of worship. It also serves as a call to purify our hearts and actions, just as this land is purified and honored, and to strive in obedience to Allah, the Lord of this sacred city.
