Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Waalidin (وَالِدٍ): The parent, specifically referring to Prophet Adam (peace be upon him), the father of all humanity.
  • Maa walad (مَا وَلَدَ): What he begot or generated — meaning his offspring and descendants, all of humanity that came after him.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) takes an oath by the father of all humankind — Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) — and by all his descendants who came from him throughout the ages. The word "maa" here carries the meaning of "man" (who), referring to the progeny of Adam, generation after generation, until the end of time.

This oath comes in the context of the preceding verses where Allah swore by the Sacred City of Makkah, honouring it and honouring the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who resides in it. Then He swears by Adam and his entire lineage, to emphasise the profound truth that follows: that Allah created human beings in hardship, struggle, and toil in this worldly life. The oath by the father of humanity and all his descendants highlights the universal nature of this message — it applies to every single human being, from the first man to the last, regardless of time or place.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder the magnificence of this divine oath. Allah, the Creator of all, swears by your very origin — by Adam, your father, and by you, his child. This is a direct address to you, personally. It tells you that your life of struggle is not random or meaningless; it is a deliberate design by the All-Wise. Every hardship you face, every difficulty you overcome, is part of a divine plan that leads you toward your ultimate purpose. The One who created you from nothing, who honoured you with existence, has not left you without guidance. He has sent you this very Qur'an to illuminate your path through the trials of this world. So embrace the struggle with patience and faith, for the reward that awaits the steadfast is beyond imagination — eternal bliss in the presence of your Most Merciful Lord.
