Word Meanings:

  • Ad-Duha (الضحى): The forenoon or mid-morning, when the sun has risen high and its light is fully spread over the earth. It refers to the brightness and radiance of the daytime.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, opens this blessed chapter with an oath by the forenoon—the time when the sun ascends and its light floods the horizon, illuminating the world with warmth and clarity. This is a time of vitality, activity, and visible beauty, when people go about their daily lives and the earth glows under the sun’s rays. The oath by this time is not merely a reference to a moment of the day; rather, it points to the entire daytime, as it is contrasted with the night mentioned in the following verse.

By swearing by the forenoon, Allah draws our attention to His magnificent creation—the precise alternation of day and night, the life-giving light of the sun, and the order of the universe that reflects His wisdom and power. When Allah swears by His creation, it is to invite us to reflect upon these signs and to affirm the truth He is about to reveal. As for the creation, no one is permitted to swear by anything other than Allah, for swearing by other than Him is a form of associating partners with Him.

The oath here serves as a prelude to a message of immense comfort and reassurance to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is as if Allah is saying: Just as the forenoon is a time of brilliant light and hope, so too will the light of revelation and divine support shine upon you, O Prophet. The oath sets the stage for the beautiful reassurance that follows in the next verse, where Allah addresses the temporary pause in revelation with words of love and care.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Beloved reader, ponder the greatness of the forenoon—how the sun rises without fail, dispelling the darkness of night and bringing life to the world. This is but a glimpse of Allah’s boundless mercy and power. He who created this light and ordered the universe is the same Lord who never abandons His faithful servants. When you witness the brightness of the morning, let it remind you that Allah’s care for you is even greater and more constant. He is always near, always aware, and His help arrives just as surely as the sun rises after the darkest night.

Let this verse fill your heart with hope and trust in Allah. No matter how long the night of hardship or waiting may seem, the forenoon of relief and divine grace is always on its way. Turn to your Lord with sincerity, and you will find that He never leaves you alone—just as He never left His beloved Prophet.
