Word Meanings:

  • Al-Usr (الْعُسْرِ): Hardship, difficulty, distress, or a state of constriction and tightness in one’s affairs.
  • Yusr (يُسْرًا): Ease, relief, facility, and expansion after difficulty.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse delivers a profound and comforting promise from Allah: truly, with hardship comes ease. The word "inna" (إِنَّ) emphasizes certainty, removing any doubt that relief is guaranteed. The verse follows the previous one—"For indeed, with hardship comes ease" (94:5)—and is repeated here for emphasis, to firmly establish this truth in the believer’s heart. The repetition is not redundant; it is a divine reinforcement, like a loving parent reassuring a child twice so that the child fully trusts the promise.

The meaning is that hardship and ease are inseparable companions in the divine scheme. Whenever difficulty arises, it is inevitably accompanied by relief, just as night is followed by dawn. This is not merely a hope but a fixed law of Allah. The verse encourages the believer to remain steadfast in spreading the message of Islam, regardless of the harm or opposition faced from others. The trials of this world—whether persecution, poverty, or personal struggles—are temporary, and Allah has decreed that with every tightness there is expansion, with every distress there is a way out, and with every hardship there is a breakthrough.

A Da'wah Reflection:

O beloved reader, let this verse be a source of unshakable hope in your life. When the waves of difficulty crash upon you, remember that Allah has already attached ease to your hardship—it is not a possibility but a certainty. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) endured immense trials in Mecca, yet Allah never abandoned him; relief came with the migration to Medina and the spread of Islam. Likewise, your trials are not the end of your story; they are the prelude to a greater ease that Allah has prepared for you. So do not let the harm of others deter you from goodness, nor let despair creep into your heart. Cling to Allah, trust His promise, and know that after every darkness, His light shines brighter. This is the beauty of Islam: it teaches you that patience is not passive, but a powerful act of faith that unlocks divine relief. Embrace it, and let your heart rest in the certainty that with hardship, there is indeed ease—now and forever.
