Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • At-Tin (التِّينِ): The fig, a well-known fruit.
  • Az-Zaytūn (الزَّيْتُونِ): The olive, a blessed fruit from which oil is extracted.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Allah begins this noble surah with an oath by two blessed fruits: the fig and the olive. The fig is a sweet, nourishing fruit, while the olive is a source of abundant goodness, from which oil is pressed for food, light, and healing. These two fruits also point to the lands where they grow—particularly the region of Palestine, a land blessed by Allah, where Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was sent with clear signs and miracles.

By swearing by these creations, Allah draws our attention to the wonders of His creation and the blessings He has placed in nature for humanity. The oath is not merely about the fruits themselves, but about the profound lessons they carry: from a tiny seed, Allah brings forth a tree that provides sustenance, healing, and light. This is a reminder of Allah's infinite power and His care for His creation.

When Allah swears by something, it is to emphasize the importance of what follows. Here, the oath leads to a magnificent truth: that Allah created the human being in the most perfect form, with intellect, free will, and the capacity for goodness. Yet, this noble creation carries a responsibility—to worship Allah and follow His guidance. Those who misuse this gift and turn away from their Creator will be reduced to the lowest of the low, while those who believe and do righteous deeds will receive an unending, generous reward.

Dear reader, reflect on this: the very fruits you eat, the olive oil you use, and the fig you enjoy are signs from your Lord, calling you to recognize His greatness and to live a life of purpose. Islam invites you to see the divine fingerprint in every leaf and every fruit, and to respond with gratitude, faith, and good deeds. The path of faith is not a burden—it is the way to fulfill the very purpose for which you were created, and it leads to a reward that never diminishes. Open your heart to this message, and let the beauty of creation guide you to the Creator.
