Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "أَلَمْ يَعْلَمْ" — Does he not know?
- "بِأَنَّ" — That indeed...
- "اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ" — Allah sees (everything, including his actions).
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a profound rhetorical question directed at the one who arrogantly tries to prevent a servant of Allah from praying — specifically referring to Abu Jahl, who threatened the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) while he was in prayer. The verse asks: Does this tyrant not realize that Allah sees every single thing he does? Nothing is hidden from Him — not his sneers, not his threats, not his plots, not even the thoughts that cross his mind.
The question is not seeking information; rather, it is a stern rebuke that shakes the conscience. It reminds the oppressor that his actions are fully witnessed by the All-Seeing, All-Knowing Creator, who records everything and will recompense him justly. If he truly believed that Allah sees him, would he dare to act with such insolence? Would he persist in harming a believer who is simply bowing to his Lord?
This verse also carries a beautiful reassurance for the believer: you are never alone. Even when people mock you, oppose you, or try to silence your worship, Allah sees your struggle and your sincerity. He sees the tears you shed in prostration and the patience you show in the face of hostility. Your worship is not lost; it is witnessed by the One whose reward is beyond imagination.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: if you truly internalized that Allah sees you at every moment — in your private moments, in your dealings, in your worship — how would your life change? This awareness is the essence of *ihsan* (excellence in faith), which the Prophet (peace be upon him) described as "worshipping Allah as though you see Him, for even though you do not see Him, He certainly sees you."
Let this verse be a gentle yet powerful reminder to guard your actions, purify your intentions, and find comfort in the fact that your Lord is always watching over you with mercy and justice. And if you ever face opposition for your faith, take courage — for the One who sees you is far greater than any who oppose you. So, like the Prophet (peace be upon him), persist in your prayer, draw closer to your Lord, and leave the rest to Him who sees all.
