Explanation of the Verse:

The People of the Book — the Jews and Christians — were not commanded in their scriptures, nor were they commanded in the Qur'an, except to do one fundamental thing: to worship Allah alone, devoting their entire religion and deeds sincerely to Him, turning away from all forms of polytheism and falsehood, and inclining towards the pure, upright faith of monotheism.

This sincere worship is not merely a matter of the heart or intention alone; it must be manifested in practical obedience. Therefore, the verse emphasizes two pillars of practical devotion: establishing the prayer (Ṣalāh) — performing it regularly, correctly, and with humility — and giving the obligatory charity (Zakāh) — purifying one's wealth by giving what is due to those who deserve it. These acts are the visible fruits of sincere faith.

The verse concludes by affirming that this — sincere worship, prayer, and charity — is the upright religion, the straight path that Allah has chosen for His servants throughout all ages. It is the religion that brings balance to the soul, justice to society, and closeness to the Creator.
