Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Mukhliṣīna lahu al-dīn" (مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ): Devoting worship and obedience exclusively to Allah, with sincerity and purity of intention, free from any form of polytheism or showing off.
  • "Ḥunafā'" (حُنَفَاءَ): Inclining away from all false religions and deviations, turning solely to the true and straight path of monotheism (Tawḥīd) — the religion of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
  • "Dīn al-Qayyimah" (دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ): The upright, straight, and unswerving religion — the path that has no crookedness or distortion in it.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) clarifies the very essence and purpose of all divine commandments throughout history. The People of the Book — the Jews and Christians — were not commanded in their scriptures, nor were they commanded in the Qur'an, except to do one fundamental thing: to worship Allah alone, devoting their entire religion and deeds sincerely to Him, turning away from all forms of polytheism and falsehood, and inclining towards the pure, upright faith of monotheism.

This sincere worship is not merely a matter of the heart or intention alone; it must be manifested in practical obedience. Therefore, the verse emphasizes two pillars of practical devotion: establishing the prayer (Ṣalāh) — performing it regularly, correctly, and with humility — and giving the obligatory charity (Zakāh) — purifying one's wealth by giving what is due to those who deserve it. These acts are the visible fruits of sincere faith.

The verse concludes by affirming that this — sincere worship, prayer, and charity — is the upright religion, the straight path that Allah has chosen for His servants throughout all ages. It is the religion that brings balance to the soul, justice to society, and closeness to the Creator.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty and simplicity of this verse! Allah does not burden us with impossible tasks or complicated rituals. He simply asks us to purify our hearts for Him, to connect with Him through prayer, and to care for our fellow human beings through charity. This is the essence of Islam — a religion of sincerity, devotion, and compassion.

If the People of the Book were commanded with this same message, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to renew and complete it, then how fortunate are we to have this clear guidance! Let us embrace this call with open hearts, making our worship purely for Allah, establishing our prayers with presence of heart, and giving our charity with generosity. This is the path to true success in this life and the Hereafter. And this is the religion that elevates a person from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge and peace.

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.
7إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَٰئِكَ هُمْ خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ
Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.
