Word Meanings:

  • تَفَرَّقَ (tafarraqa): They divided, split, or became disunited.
  • الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ (alladhīna ūtū al-kitāb): Those who were given the Scripture — i.e., the Jews (given the Torah) and the Christians (given the Gospel).
  • الْبَيِّنَةُ (al-bayyinah): The clear evidence, the manifest proof — referring here to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the decisive signs confirming his prophethood.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse exposes a profound truth about human nature and the reception of divine guidance. Allah informs us that the People of the Book — the Jews and Christians — did not fall into division and disagreement regarding the truth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) until after the clear proof had come to them.

Before his advent, they were united in their expectation of him. Their scriptures — the Torah and the Gospel — contained his description, his attributes, and the signs of his coming. They would even cite these prophecies when arguing against the polytheists, saying, "A prophet is about to be sent, and we will follow him." They were, in a sense, agreed upon his truthfulness and awaited his arrival with conviction.

Yet, when the clear evidence finally arrived — when Allah sent Muhammad (peace be upon him) with the Qur'an and manifest miracles, and when they saw that he matched exactly what they had in their books — they did not embrace him. Instead, they split into factions: some believed sincerely and entered the fold of Islam, while others persisted in disbelief out of envy, arrogance, and the fear of losing their worldly status and leadership. They knew the truth in their hearts, but their pride and attachment to their own traditions drove them to reject what they had once affirmed.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that division often stems not from a lack of evidence, but from a refusal to submit to the truth when it becomes clear. The "clear proof" (al-bayyinah) was not ambiguous — it was undeniable. Yet, the human heart, when clouded by envy or worldly desires, can turn away from even the most luminous signs.

A Call to Reflection and Unity:

Dear reader, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. How often do we know the truth, yet hesitate to act upon it? How often do we let pride, habit, or the opinions of others keep us from what our hearts already recognize as right?

The Qur'an calls you to a beautiful simplicity: when the truth becomes clear, embrace it without delay. Do not let division, envy, or stubbornness rob you of the peace that comes with submission to Allah. The People of the Book had every reason to be the first to believe — they had the prophecies, the knowledge, and the expectation. Yet, their envy prevented them from reaping the reward.

For you, the proof is even clearer. The Qur'an stands as an eternal miracle, preserved in its original language, challenging humanity to produce even a chapter like it. The life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is documented in meticulous detail, a living testimony to his truthfulness. So, when the evidence is before you, do not be like those who divided after the proof came. Be among those who unite upon the truth, who submit with sincerity, and who find in Islam the completion of their faith and the tranquility of their hearts.

Indeed, Allah does not leave humanity in darkness. He sends His messengers and His signs so that no one may have an excuse. The question is: will you be among those who recognize the clear proof and respond to it with faith, or among those who turn away despite knowing? Choose wisely, for this choice determines your success in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 2-6 — Al-Bayyinah

A Messenger from Allah, reciting purified scriptures
Within which are correct writings.
Nor did those who were given the Scripture become divided until after there had come to them clear evidence.
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.
