Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ummatan wahidah (أمة واحدة): One single community or nation, united upon one faith and one way of life.
- Fakhtalafu (فاختلفوا): They diverged and split into different sects and beliefs.
- Kalimah sabaqat (كلمة سبقت): A prior decree or word that had already been issued by Allah.
- Laqudiya baynahum (لقضي بينهم): Judgment would have been passed between them, separating truth from falsehood.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah informs us that humanity originally began as a single community, united upon the pure and natural faith of monotheism — the worship of Allah alone, the religion of Islam. This was the state of the early generations, from Adam to the time when division crept in. Then, due to envy, stubbornness, and the whispers of Satan, people differed: some remained steadfast upon the truth, while others deviated into disbelief, polytheism, and various false creeds.
Had it not been for a prior decree from your Lord — that He would not settle the dispute between them in this worldly life, but rather defer the final judgment to the Day of Resurrection — the matter would have been decided immediately. The people of falsehood would have been destroyed on the spot, and the people of truth would have been saved and vindicated. But Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, has granted a respite. He delays the decisive verdict to the Hereafter, where every soul will be recompensed with perfect justice.
This verse carries a profound lesson: the existence of difference and division among people is a test. Allah has given us the freedom to choose, and He has sent messengers and revealed scriptures to guide us through this test. The ultimate separation between the guided and the misguided, the truthful and the false, will be made manifest on the Day when no soul will be wronged in the least.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this verse in teaching us that the original state of humanity was unity upon truth! It reminds us that Islam is not a foreign religion — it is the natural disposition upon which every human being was created. The differences that divide people today are not from Allah's design, but from human deviation. As a believer, you are called to return to that original unity — to worship Allah alone, to follow His Messenger ﷺ, and to embody the values of mercy, justice, and brotherhood. The promise of Allah is true: the final judgment is coming, and on that day, the truth will shine unmistakably, and every soul will reap what it has sown. So hold fast to the rope of Allah, and do not let the differences of this world distract you from the ultimate goal — the pleasure of your Lord and the eternal bliss of Paradise.
