Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Lawla (لَوْلَا): Why not / If only — a phrase used to express a suggestion or demand.
- Āyah (آيَة): A sign, miracle, or evidence — here referring to a tangible, supernatural proof they demanded.
- Al-Ghayb (الْغَيْب): The unseen, that which is hidden from human perception and known only to Allah.
- Fa-ntaẓirū (فَانتَظِرُوا): So wait — an imperative commanding patience and anticipation of Allah’s decree.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, stubborn and defiant, kept repeating their demand: “Why has a sign not been sent down upon him from his Lord?” They wanted a visible, material miracle — something they could see with their own eyes — to prove the truth of the Prophet Muhammad’s message. Yet their intention was not sincere guidance; it was mockery and evasion, for they had already witnessed the greatest miracle of all: the Qur’an itself, a Book of unmatched eloquence and wisdom that no human could produce.
Allah instructs His Prophet to answer them with a profound truth: “Say: Indeed, the unseen belongs to Allah alone.” This means that the timing, nature, and wisdom of sending signs are matters of the unseen, known only to Allah. He alone decides when and how His will unfolds. The Prophet does not command the affairs of the unseen; he merely delivers the message. If Allah wills a sign to appear, it appears — and if He wills to delay it, His wisdom is perfect.
Then comes the decisive command: “So wait — indeed, I am with you among those who wait.” This is a powerful call to patience and certainty. The Prophet is told to await Allah’s judgment with full confidence, while the disbelievers are left to await the consequence of their denial. The outcome is inevitable: truth will triumph, falsehood will perish, and those who mocked will see the reality of what they rejected.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every believer. When people demand signs before they believe, remind them that the greatest sign is already before their eyes: the Qur’an, the universe, and the Prophet’s impeccable character. Faith is not about waiting for extraordinary events; it is about opening the heart to the extraordinary truth already revealed. And when you face mockery or doubt, do not despair — wait with patience and certainty, for Allah’s promise is true, and His help is near. The believer’s strength lies not in proving himself to others, but in trusting the One who knows all that is hidden and visible.
