📖 English Meaning
And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah " Say, "Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Shufa'ā'unā (شُفَعَاؤُنَا): Our intercessors — those who would plead on our behalf.
  • A-tunabbi'ūna (أَتُنَبِّئُونَ): Are you informing or telling?
  • Subḥānahu (سُبْحَانَهُ): Glory be to Him — declaring His absolute perfection and freedom from all defects.

Tafsir (Explanation):

These verses expose the deep contradiction in the logic of idolaters. They worship, besides Allah, beings and objects that possess absolutely no power — they cannot harm them if disobeyed, nor benefit them if worshipped. These are lifeless idols, deaf and blind, incapable of even the smallest act. Yet the worshippers claim, "These are our intercessors with Allah!" They imagine that these idols will speak for them on the Day of Judgment and secure their salvation.

Allah commands His Messenger to confront them with a question that shatters their illusion: "Are you informing Allah of something He does not know exists in the heavens or on the earth?" This is a devastating rhetorical rebuke. If there truly were any partners or intercessors with Allah, He — who knows every atom in the heavens and the earth — would certainly know them. The fact that Allah knows of no such partners proves their claim is pure fabrication and falsehood.

Then the verse concludes with the most beautiful declaration of Allah's transcendence: "Glory be to Him and exalted is He above what they associate." Allah is far above, completely free from, and utterly removed from the partners they invent. He is One, Unique, and Self-Sufficient — needing no intercessors, no partners, and no associates.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this: how can a human being place their hopes and fears in something that cannot even protect itself from dust or decay? The idols of stone and wood, the stars in the sky, the saints and prophets — none of them can intercede for anyone except by Allah's permission, and Allah grants that permission only to those He loves and for those He wills. The true path to salvation is not through invented intermediaries, but through direct, sincere worship of the Creator alone. He is closer to you than your own jugular vein — He hears your prayers, knows your needs, and responds to your call without any need for a "bridge." Turn to Him directly, purify your worship for Him alone, and you will find that He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, the One who never disappoints those who sincerely seek Him.

📜 Verse 16-20 — Yunus

Say, "If Allah had willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you, for I had remained among you a lifetime before it. Then will you not reason?"
So who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allah or denies His signs? Indeed, the criminals will not succeed
And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, "These are our intercessors with Allah " Say, "Do you inform Allah of something He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?" Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him
And mankind was not but one community [united in religion], but [then] they differed. And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them [immediately] concerning that over which they differ.
And they say, "Why is a sign not sent down to him from his Lord?" So say, "The unseen is only for Allah [to administer], so wait; indeed, I am with you among those who wait."
