Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yanzuru ilayka — looks at you with their physical eyes.
- Ta'hdi — guide or direct to the path of truth.
- Al-'umyi — the blind; here referring to those blinded in their hearts and insight, not physical blindness.
- La yubsirun — they do not see (with true perception).
Tafsir (Explanation):
Among the disbelievers, O Messenger, are those who look at you with their own eyes — they see your face, your movements, and the signs of prophethood upon you — yet they fail to perceive the light of faith that Allah has placed in you. Their gaze is superficial, fixed on the outward form, while their inner vision remains sealed. They look at you in wonder and mockery, but their hearts are devoid of understanding.
So Allah poses a profound question: Can you, O Prophet, make the blind see? Can you grant sight to those whose eyes are closed? Certainly not — for that is beyond any human capacity. Likewise, you cannot guide those who have lost their inner sight, those whose spiritual perception is dead. Guidance of the heart is solely in the Hands of Allah alone. He is the One who opens the eyes of the heart and grants insight to whom He wills.
This verse draws a powerful distinction between physical sight and spiritual insight. A person may see with their eyes yet remain utterly blind to the truth. The disbelievers witnessed the Prophet ﷺ, heard his words, and observed his impeccable character — yet they turned away because their hearts were veiled. The Prophet's mission was to convey the message clearly; he did what was required of him. But the transformation of hearts, the opening of blind souls — that belongs exclusively to Allah, the Most Merciful, the All-Wise.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect: how many people walk through life with healthy eyes, yet stumble in darkness? And how many have lost their physical sight, yet their hearts radiate with the light of faith? True blindness is not the absence of eyesight — it is the absence of insight. The Qur'an repeatedly calls us to open the eyes of our hearts, to see the signs of Allah scattered across the universe and within ourselves. This is the greatest gift: a heart that sees, a soul that perceives, and a mind that submits to its Creator. Do not be among those who look but do not see. Let your heart be alive, and let the light of guidance fill your being — for that light is the key to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
