Word Meanings:

  • يَسْتَمِعُونَ (they listen): They hear with their ears, but without any intention of accepting or responding to the truth.
  • الصُّمّ (the deaf): Those who are deprived of hearing; here, it refers metaphorically to those whose hearts are sealed against the truth.
  • لَا يَعْقِلُونَ (they do not reason): They do not use their intellect to reflect upon and comprehend the message.

Explanation of the Verse:

Among the disbelievers, O Messenger, are those who physically come to you and listen to your recitation of the Qur'an with their ears. They hear the words clearly, yet their hearts remain closed, and they gain no benefit from what they hear. Their listening is not accompanied by acceptance or submission; it is merely a superficial act, for their hearts do not grasp the meaning or ponder over it.

So Allah poses a rhetorical question to His Prophet, peace be upon him: "Can you make the deaf hear?" The answer is, of course, no. Just as you cannot restore hearing to one who is physically deaf, you cannot guide those whose hearts have become deaf to the truth, especially when they refuse to use their intellect to reflect upon what they hear. Guidance is solely in the Hands of Allah; your duty, O Messenger, is only to convey the message clearly.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth: the ears may hear, but it is the heart that truly listens. How many people have heard the Qur'an yet walked away unchanged, while others have been transformed by a single verse? The difference lies in the heart's openness and the willingness to reason. Do not be like those who hear but do not listen, and who see but do not perceive. Open your heart to the Qur'an, reflect on its meanings, and let its light illuminate your soul. For the Qur'an is a mercy and a healing for those who believe, and a clear proof against those who turn away. Allah has made the path of guidance clear, and He invites you to walk it with sincerity and understanding.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Yunus

And of them are those who believe in it, and of them are those who do not believe in it. And your Lord is most knowing of the corrupters
And if they deny you, [O Muhammad], then say, "For me are my deeds, and for you are your deeds. You are disassociated from what I do, and I am disassociated from what you do."
And among them are those who listen to you. But can you cause the deaf to hear, although they will not use reason?
And among them are those who look at you. But can you guide the blind although they will not [attempt to] see?
Indeed, Allah does not wrong the people at all, but it is the people who are wronging themselves.
