Key Words:

  • Khaffat (خَفَّتْ): Became light, decreased in weight.
  • Mawazinuhu (مَوَازِينُهُ): His scales (the balance of deeds on the Day of Judgment).

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes the second category of people on the Day of Judgment—those whose scales of good deeds are found to be light. This means their righteous actions, acts of worship, and good deeds are outweighed by their sins, transgressions, and disobedience to Allah. The weighing of deeds is a true and just measure established by Allah on that momentous Day, where no atom's weight of good or evil will be overlooked. When a person's evil deeds tip the balance, their fate becomes one of loss and ruin, as their destination will be the blazing Fire. This serves as a profound reminder that our actions in this worldly life are being recorded and will be weighed with absolute precision, and that no deed—however small—is ever wasted in the scales of divine justice.

Reflection and Guidance:

This verse instills in the believer a sense of urgency and self-accountability. It calls upon us to examine our own scales before that Day arrives—to increase our good deeds through sincere worship, kindness to others, charity, and remembrance of Allah, while constantly seeking forgiveness for our shortcomings. The lightening of the scales is not a random occurrence; it is the natural consequence of neglecting our duties toward Allah and toward His creation. Therefore, let this verse be a wake-up call to every soul: strive to fill your scales with what is heavy and lasting—faith, good character, and righteous actions—so that when you stand before your Lord, your scales may be heavy with what pleases Him, and you may be among the successful. Indeed, the Qur'an guides us to the straight path, and the one who follows it will never be led astray.
