Word Meanings:

  • Anba' al-qura (أَنبَاءِ الْقُرَىٰ): The news and stories of the towns and their peoples.
  • Qa'im (قَائِمٌ): Standing; refers to towns whose ruins and traces still remain visible.
  • Haseed (حَصِيدٌ): Reaped or harvested; refers to towns whose traces have been completely wiped out, as if they were crops reaped and removed from the face of the earth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, this Qur'anic narrative that has been presented to you contains the stories of the towns whose peoples were destroyed because of their disbelief and transgression. Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, relates these accounts to you so that they may serve as lessons and reminders for humanity. Among these towns, some still have their structures and ruins standing as silent witnesses to the fate of their inhabitants — walls remain, but the life within them has vanished. Others have been utterly obliterated, their traces erased completely, as if they had never existed at all — like a field that has been harvested, leaving nothing behind.

These stories are not mere legends or myths; they are historical truths that carry profound significance. They demonstrate the sunnah (way) of Allah with nations — that when people persist in falsehood and reject the truth, the divine punishment inevitably follows. Yet, these accounts also reveal Allah's justice and mercy: He never destroys a people without first sending them clear warnings through His messengers.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon these verses. The ruins that remain and the traces that have vanished both speak the same message: no power, wealth, or status can protect anyone from the decree of Allah when His command arrives. These stories are not meant to frighten you into despair, but rather to awaken your heart and guide you toward what is everlasting. The Qur'an presents these narratives so that you may learn from the past and build a better future — a future founded on faith, righteousness, and submission to the Creator. Every nation that was destroyed had its moment of opportunity; they were given time, resources, and messengers. Yet they chose arrogance over humility, and transgression over obedience.

Today, you have been given the same opportunity — the opportunity to reflect, repent, and reform. The fact that you are reading these words is itself a mercy from Allah, an invitation to be among those who heed the lessons of history. Do not let your heart be like the hardened ruins of those past nations; rather, let it be soft, receptive, and alive with the light of faith. For the Qur'an is not merely a book of stories — it is a living guide, and its lessons are as relevant today as they were when they were first revealed. Embrace its guidance, and you will find success in this life and the Hereafter.

📜 Verse 98-102 — Hud

He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led.
And they were followed in this [world] with a curse and on the Day of Resurrection. And wretched is the gift which is given.
That is from the news of the cities, which We relate to you; of them, some are [still] standing and some are [as] a harvest [mowed down].
And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allah when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.
And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.
