Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Marjuwwan (مَرْجُوًّا): One from whom great good is hoped and expected; a person of high standing and promise.
- Mureeb (مُرِيبٍ): Causing doubt and suspicion; something that unsettles the heart and prevents tranquility.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The people of Thamud addressed their prophet Salih (peace be upon him) with words that mixed a strange acknowledgment of his past virtue with a stubborn rejection of his message. They said: "O Salih, before this call of yours, we had high hopes for you. We saw you as a person of wisdom, sound judgment, and noble character—someone who could become a respected leader among us. But now, you have come to us with this message, and you forbid us from worshipping what our forefathers worshipped."
Their words reveal a deep contradiction in their attitude. On one hand, they admitted that Salih was a man of excellence and promise among them. On the other hand, they could not accept the very message that would have completed his excellence—the call to pure monotheism. They clung to the ways of their ancestors, treating inherited tradition as sacred truth, even when it contradicted clear reason and revelation.
Their question, "Do you forbid us from worshipping what our fathers worshipped?" was not a sincere inquiry but an expression of denial and mockery. They made the worship of their forefathers' idols a matter of pride and identity, refusing to see that truth is not determined by ancestry but by evidence and divine guidance.
Then they added a statement that exposed their inner turmoil: "Indeed, we are in disquieting doubt about what you call us to." They claimed to be uncertain about the message of tawheed (the Oneness of Allah), yet their doubt was not born of genuine intellectual inquiry—it was a restless, unsettling doubt that they themselves described as *mureeb*, a doubt that robbed their hearts of peace and left them in a state of constant unease.
How strange is the state of those who reject the truth! They find comfort in the darkness of inherited ignorance, yet they are restless and disturbed. The call to tawheed, which brings serenity and certainty to the hearts of believers, becomes a source of anxiety for them—not because the message is flawed, but because their hearts are attached to falsehood.
Dear reader, reflect on this scene. The people of Thamud had a man of virtue and wisdom among them, yet they turned away from his guidance because it challenged their comfortable traditions. How many of us today are in a similar position? We may respect scholars and righteous people, but when their words call us to change our ways, we resist and find excuses.
The message of Salih (peace be upon him) was simple and profound: worship Allah alone, and leave the false gods that neither benefit nor harm. This same message is at the heart of Islam—the call to purify our worship, to direct it solely to the Creator of the heavens and the earth. It is a call that liberates the soul from the shackles of blind tradition and false reverence, and elevates it to the dignity of true servitude to Allah alone.
Let us not be like those who acknowledged the virtue of the truth-bearer but rejected the truth itself. Let us open our hearts to the call of tawheed, for in it lies the peace that the doubters of every age have failed to find. The Qur'an is the living miracle that continues to guide humanity, and its message is as relevant today as it was in the time of Salih. Embrace it, and you will find the certainty that dispels all doubt and the light that illuminates every darkness.
