Surah Hud — Verse 61

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah tells us about His Messenger Salih (peace be upon him), whom He sent to the people of Thamud—a tribe known for their strength and their remarkable skill in carving homes out of mountains. Salih was their brother in lineage, not in religion, and he came to them with the same core message brought by all prophets: "O my people, worship Allah alone—you have no deity worthy of worship other than Him."

Salih called them to pure monotheism, freeing their hearts from the worship of false idols and directing all devotion to the One True God. He then reminded them of Allah's immense favors upon them, saying: "He originated you from the earth" —meaning that Allah created their father Adam from clay, and from him multiplied all of humanity. This is a profound reminder of their humble beginnings, inviting them to reflect on the power of their Creator.

Then Salih added: "And He made you settlers therein" —Allah not only created them but also appointed them as caretakers and builders of the earth. He gave them the land, its resources, and the ability to cultivate it, construct homes, and thrive. This is a great blessing that calls for gratitude, not ingratitude and rebellion.

After establishing Allah's favors, Salih commanded them: "So seek His forgiveness, then turn to Him in repentance." This is the natural response to recognizing Allah's blessings—to purify oneself from sins, ask for His pardon, and commit to a life of obedience. The order of "seeking forgiveness" followed by "repentance" indicates that one should first cleanse the heart from past wrongdoings, then firmly resolve to change one's course toward Allah.

Salih concluded with words of immense hope and encouragement: "Indeed, my Lord is Near and Responsive." This is a beautiful reassurance that Allah is not distant or unreachable. He is close to those who worship Him sincerely, and He answers the supplications of those who call upon Him. This nearness is not physical but spiritual—He knows our thoughts, hears our prayers, and responds to our needs in ways we may not even perceive.
