Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Niswah (نِسْوَةٌ): A group of women.
  • Turaawidu (تُرَاوِدُ): She seeks to seduce or tempt him.
  • Fataahaa (فَتَاهَا): Her young servant or slave boy.
  • Shaghafahaa (شَغَفَهَا): His love had penetrated to the very core of her heart—its innermost covering (the pericardium, the membrane enveloping the heart).
  • Dalaalin mubeen (ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ): Clear, evident error or misguidance.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The news of the Aziz's wife and her young servant spread through the city, and a group of women—likely from the elite circles of society—began to talk about it in disbelief and criticism. They said: "The wife of the high-ranking official is trying to seduce her own servant, seeking to satisfy her desire with him. Her love for him has pierced through to the very core of her heart, overwhelming her completely." Then they added, with a tone of reproach: "We truly see her in clear, undeniable error—how could she lower herself to such a state over her servant, losing her dignity and reason?"

These women were not merely gossiping; their words carried a sharp rebuke. They saw her behavior as a departure from natural decency and social propriety, especially given her status as the wife of a powerful man. Yet, their criticism also set the stage for what was to come—their own test when they would eventually see Yusuf (peace be upon him) with their own eyes and understand how such love could take hold of a heart.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the power of unchecked desires and the importance of guarding our hearts. The women of the city were quick to judge another's fall, unaware that they too could be vulnerable. As believers, we must never feel secure from trials, nor should we mock others for their mistakes—for guidance and steadfastness are gifts from Allah. At the same time, we see how a pure soul like Yusuf (peace be upon him) remained firm in his chastity and faith despite immense pressure. His story is a beacon of hope: no matter how strong the temptation or how widespread the criticism, clinging to Allah's protection and maintaining one's integrity leads to honor in this life and the next. Let us learn from this—to lower our gaze, control our desires, and seek Allah's help in every moment of weakness, for He is the One who turns hearts and grants steadfastness.

📜 Verse 28-32 — Yusuf

So when her husband saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great.
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-'Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allah! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."
She said, "That is the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he firmly refused; and if he will not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned and will be of those debased."
