Word Meanings:

  • A'rid (أَعْرِضْ): Turn away, overlook, or disregard.
  • Istaqhfiri (اسْتَغْفِرِي): Seek forgiveness, repent.
  • Al-Khati'in (الْخَاطِئِينَ): Those who commit sin deliberately and intentionally.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound moment, the Aziz of Egypt—the high-ranking official whose wife had attempted to seduce Prophet Yusuf (Joseph, peace be upon him)—addresses both parties with remarkable wisdom and restraint. Turning to Yusuf, he says: *"O Yusuf, turn away from this matter"*—meaning, do not speak of it to anyone, do not let it spread, and do not let it burden your heart. This was an act of protecting Yusuf's honour and shielding him from the scandal that could have destroyed his reputation, even though he was the innocent party.

Then, addressing his wife directly, he says: *"And seek forgiveness for your sin"*—acknowledging her guilt and calling her to repentance. He does not deny what happened, nor does he punish her publicly; instead, he opens the door for her to return to Allah in sincere repentance. His words, *"Indeed, you are among the sinners"*, are a gentle but firm reminder of her accountability before Allah, even as he shields her from public disgrace.

Some scholars have noted that the verse uses the masculine plural form *"al-khati'in"* rather than the feminine plural, indicating that the statement carries a broader meaning—it is not merely about her alone, but about all those who commit such sins, male or female. This serves as a universal lesson: sin is sin, regardless of who commits it, and the path to purification is always open through repentance.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us several beautiful lessons that resonate with every believer:

  1. The nobility of forgiveness: The Aziz could have publicly humiliated his wife or punished Yusuf, but instead he chose discretion and mercy. As Muslims, we are taught to cover the faults of others, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: *"Whoever covers the fault of a Muslim, Allah will cover his fault in this world and the Hereafter."*
  2. The power of repentance: Even after a grave sin, the door of forgiveness is wide open. Allah says: *"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins."* (Az-Zumar 39:53). No matter how far we have fallen, we can always return to our Lord with a sincere heart.
  3. Protecting the innocent: Yusuf was innocent, yet he was told to remain silent. This teaches us that sometimes, wisdom requires us to let go of our right to defend ourselves for the sake of preserving peace and dignity. Allah later elevated Yusuf to a position of power, proving that patience and trust in Allah always lead to honour.
  4. Accountability before Allah: The call to *"seek forgiveness"* reminds us that our ultimate judge is Allah. Human justice may be imperfect, but Allah's justice is absolute. When we sin, we must hasten to repent, for we do not know when our time will come.

Dear reader, this story is not just history—it is a living lesson. It tells you that no matter what mistakes you have made, Allah's mercy is greater than your sin. The moment you turn to Him in sincerity, He turns to you with forgiveness. And it tells you that even in the most difficult situations, maintaining your dignity, protecting others' honour, and trusting in Allah's plan will always lead you to a beautiful outcome. Let this verse inspire you to be quick in seeking forgiveness, slow in exposing others, and firm in your trust that Allah's wisdom is perfect.

📜 Verse 27-31 — Yusuf

27وَإِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍ فَكَذَبَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ
But if his shirt is torn from the back, then she has lied, and he is of the truthful."
28فَلَمَّا رَأَىٰ قَمِيصَهُ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍ قَالَ إِنَّهُ مِن كَيْدِكُنَّ ۖ إِنَّ كَيْدَكُنَّ عَظِيمٌ
So when her husband saw his shirt torn from the back, he said, "Indeed, it is of the women's plan. Indeed, your plan is great.
29يُوسُفُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَٰذَا ۚ وَاسْتَغْفِرِي لِذَنبِكِ ۖ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ الْخَاطِئِينَ
Joseph, ignore this. And, [my wife], ask forgiveness for your sin. Indeed, you were of the sinful."
30۞ وَقَالَ نِسْوَةٌ فِي الْمَدِينَةِ امْرَأَتُ الْعَزِيزِ تُرَاوِدُ فَتَاهَا عَن نَّفْسِهِ ۖ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّا ۖ إِنَّا لَنَرَاهَا فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ
And women in the city said, "The wife of al-'Azeez is seeking to seduce her slave boy; he has impassioned her with love. Indeed, we see her [to be] in clear error."
So when she heard of their scheming, she sent for them and prepared for them a banquet and gave each one of them a knife and said [to Joseph], "Come out before them." And when they saw him, they greatly admired him and cut their hands and said, "Perfect is Allah! This is not a man; this is none but a noble angel."
