Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Sakantum (وَسَكَنتُمْ): You dwelt, settled, or resided.
- Masakin (مَسَاكِنِ): Dwellings, homes, or habitations.
- Zalamu anfusahum (ظَلَمُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ): Wronged themselves — i.e., through disbelief, disobedience, and transgression against Allah's commands.
- Tabayyana (تَبَيَّنَ): It became clear, evident, or manifest.
- Darabna lakum al-amthal (ضَرَبْنَا لَكُمُ الْأَمْثَالَ): We set forth for you parables, examples, and lessons — i.e., We made clear to you their stories and fates as a warning.
The Interpretation:
Allah, the Most High, addresses the disbelievers of later generations, reminding them of a profound and undeniable truth: they had settled in the very dwellings of those who came before them and who had wronged themselves through their arrogance, disbelief, and rejection of Allah's messengers. These were nations like the people of Hud ('Ad) and the people of Salih (Thamud), whose carved homes in the mountains and grand structures stood as silent witnesses to their former power and eventual ruin.
The verse continues: "And it became clear to you how We dealt with them." Indeed, the ruins of their civilizations, the remnants of their palaces, and the stories passed down through generations all testified to the devastating punishment that befell them — some were destroyed by a furious wind, others by a mighty blast, and all were brought to nothing because they persisted in their transgression. The evidence was not hidden or obscure; it was plain for anyone with eyes to see and a heart to reflect.
Then Allah says: "And We set forth for you parables." This means that Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, did not leave humanity without guidance. He revealed their stories in the Qur'an, described their end, and presented their examples so that people might learn, take heed, and avoid the same path of ruin. The parables were not merely historical accounts; they were living lessons, designed to awaken the conscience and steer the soul toward righteousness.
Yet, despite all this — despite the visible ruins, the transmitted stories, and the clear parables in the Book of Allah — the disbelievers failed to take the warning. They saw with their eyes but did not see with their hearts. They heard with their ears but did not listen with their minds. They were given every opportunity to reflect, yet they turned away, and thus they sealed their own fate.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder this verse deeply. How many nations before us have lived in luxury, built magnificent cities, and amassed great power — only to be wiped away in an instant when they defied their Creator? Their homes remain as empty shells, their names are but footnotes in history, and their wealth could not protect them from Allah's decree.
This verse is not merely a historical statement; it is a living reminder for every generation, including ours. We see the remnants of past civilizations, we read their stories, and we witness the consequences of arrogance and disobedience. The question is: will we be among those who learn from these examples, or will we repeat their mistakes?
Allah, in His mercy, has given us the Qur'an as a guide, filled with parables and lessons. He has sent messengers and revealed scriptures. He has shown us the fate of the wrongdoers so that we might choose a different path. Let us not be like those who saw the truth but turned away. Let us open our hearts to reflection, humble ourselves before our Lord, and strive to be among those who heed the warning and attain His pleasure and eternal success. For the dwellings of this world are temporary, but the Hereafter is everlasting — and only those who prepare for it will truly prosper.
