📖 English Meaning
Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

Translation — Tafsir

  • Naba' (نبأ): News, tidings, or account of something significant.
  • Qawmi Nūḥ (قوم نوح): The people of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him).
  • ʿĀd (عاد): The ancient tribe of ʿĀd, to whom Prophet Hūd was sent.
  • Thamūd (ثمود): The tribe of Thamūd, to whom Prophet Ṣāliḥ was sent.
  • Al-Bayyināt (البينات): Clear proofs, evident miracles, and unmistakable signs.
  • Faraddū aydiyahum fī afwāhihim (فردوا أيديهم في أفواههم): They bit their hands in rage and frustration, or placed their hands over their mouths in denial and anger.
  • Murīb (مريب): Causing doubt, suspicion, or unsettling uncertainty.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O people of Muhammad (peace be upon him), has the story of the nations who came before you not reached you? The people of Noah, the tribe of ʿĀd, the tribe of Thamūd, and countless other nations that followed them—so numerous that only Allah knows their exact number? These are not myths or legends; they are historical realities recorded for your reflection. Their messengers came to them with undeniable miracles and crystal-clear proofs, calling them to the worship of Allah alone. But how did these nations respond? They bit their hands in fury, a gesture of intense anger and arrogance, refusing to even consider the truth. They said to their messengers: "We reject what you have been sent with, and we are in unsettling doubt about what you call us to—monotheism and faith."

This verse is a powerful reminder that arrogance and blind stubbornness have always been the enemies of truth. The nations before us were far stronger, wealthier, and more advanced than we are, yet when the truth came to them, they met it with hostility and pride. Their fate was sealed not because they lacked intelligence, but because they refused to humble themselves before their Creator.

Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at your own heart today. When you hear the call to prayer, when you read the Qur'an, when you see the signs of Allah in the universe—do you respond with humility and openness, or do you, like those nations, turn away in pride? The messengers of Allah came with love and mercy, yet they were met with anger and rejection. Today, the same message of Islam reaches you through the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Do not let arrogance or worldly attachments blind you. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast. Be among those who listen to the truth and accept it, for the success of this life and the next lies in submitting to your Lord. The nations that rejected their messengers are now nothing but lessons in history—so learn from them before it is too late.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Ibrahim

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.' "
And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy."
Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays your death for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority."
Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
