Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ghaniyy (غني): Self-Sufficient, free of all needs, independent of His creation.
- Hamid (حميد): Praiseworthy, deserving of all praise and gratitude in every circumstance.
Explanation of the Verse:
Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, addressed his people with a profound truth that cuts through all illusions of self-importance. He said: "If you disbelieve—you and all the inhabitants of the earth together—your disbelief will not harm Allah in the least." This statement was not a threat or a warning of punishment alone, but a declaration of Allah's absolute perfection and independence.
Musa was teaching his people a fundamental lesson about the nature of their Lord. Allah does not need our worship, our faith, or our obedience. He is complete in Himself, utterly free of any need for His creation. Your disbelief, even if multiplied by every soul that ever walked the earth, would not diminish His glory by a single atom. Likewise, your faith, however sincere and vast, adds nothing to His majesty.
Yet, in the same breath, Musa reminds them that Allah is *Hamid*—the Praiseworthy. He is deserving of all praise not because He needs it, but because He is inherently worthy of it. His mercy, His wisdom, His justice, and His boundless generosity all call forth gratitude and praise from His creatures. Even in the face of rejection, He remains worthy of praise, for His attributes are perfect regardless of how humanity responds to Him.
The beauty of this verse lies in its gentle yet firm redirection. It frees the believer from the burden of thinking they are doing Allah a favor by worshipping Him. Rather, worship is a gift *to ourselves*—a path to our own peace, growth, and salvation. And it frees the doubter from the illusion that their rejection carries any weight against the Almighty. The One who created the heavens and the earth, who sustains every living thing, who holds all power in His hands—He is far above being affected by the choices of His servants.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder this: if your faith and your disbelief cannot harm or benefit Allah, then for whose sake do you pray, fast, give charity, and seek His pleasure? It is for your own soul. Allah has opened the door of His mercy and invited you to walk through it—not because He needs your company, but because He loves you and wants you to taste the sweetness of His nearness. When you realize that your worship is a gift to yourself, your heart fills with love for this Generous Lord who, despite His absolute self-sufficiency, still calls you to Him, still forgives you, still provides for you, and still praises you for the good you do. How can you not love a Lord like this? How can you not rush to thank the One who is Ghaniyy—needing nothing—yet Hamid—praising and rewarding His servants for their humble efforts? Let this verse awaken in you a pure, sincere devotion—not out of fear or expectation, but out of love for the One who is worthy of all praise, in every moment, in every state.
