Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Dābbah" (دَابَّة): Every living creature that moves upon the earth, whether on land, in the sea, or in the air. It includes all animals, from the smallest insect to the largest beast, and even encompasses those that crawl or walk.
- "Yasjudu" (يَسْجُدُ): To prostrate in humble submission and worship, acknowledging the absolute Lordship and Majesty of Allah.
- "Lā yastakbirūn" (لَا يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ): They do not show arrogance or pride; they do not deem themselves too great to submit and obey.
The Interpretation:
To Allah alone belongs all worship, and to Him alone does everything in the heavens and the earth prostrate in humble submission. Every living creature—whether it walks on the earth, flies in the sky, or dwells in the depths of the seas—is in a state of surrender to its Creator, whether it does so consciously or by the very nature of its existence. The angels, too, prostrate to Allah, and they are singled out for mention after the general statement because of their noble rank, their pure devotion, and their constant worship. They never show arrogance or pride; they do not deem themselves too great to bow before their Lord. Instead, they are ever-obedient, glorifying Him day and night without weariness.
This verse reminds us of the universal submission of all creation to Allah. Every atom in the universe, every leaf that falls, and every creature that breathes is a living sign of His power and oneness. When you see a bird soaring in the sky, a fish gliding in the water, or a mountain standing firm, know that they are all prostrating to their Lord in their own way. And the angels—those pure and noble beings—never hesitate in their worship, nor do they ever feel too proud to obey.
Dear believer, if all of creation submits to Allah willingly, how can we, as human beings endowed with intellect and free will, ever turn away from Him in pride? Let this verse be a call to humility. Let it soften your heart and remind you that true greatness lies not in arrogance, but in bowing down to the One who created you, sustains you, and will one day bring you back to Him. The door of repentance is always open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not let your ego hold you back from the peace that comes with submission. Prostrate to your Lord, and you will find honor in this life and the next.
