- Zilal (ظِلَالُ): Shadows or shades cast by objects.
- Sujjadan (سُجَّدًا): Prostrating — here meaning in a state of complete humility and submission to Allah.
- Dakhirun (دَاخِرُونَ): Utterly humbled, subdued, and in a state of total submission and lowliness.
The Explanation of the Verse:
Have these disbelievers not looked with open, thoughtful eyes at what Allah has created? Every object that casts a shadow — the mountains, the trees, the rocks, the buildings — its shade bends and turns, leaning now to the right, now to the left, from the beginning of the day to its end. The shadow stretches in the morning, shrinks at noon, then lengthens again in the afternoon, following the sun's path across the sky, and at night it shifts with the moonlight. This constant, precise movement is not random or accidental — it is the very act of creation itself bowing in prostration to its Lord. Every shadow that moves across the earth is a silent witness, a living sign, prostrating to Allah in complete humility and submission. These creatures — though they have no minds or wills of their own — are utterly subdued, lowly, and obedient to their Creator's command. They cannot refuse, they cannot resist, they cannot deviate from the order He has placed upon them.
Yet despite all this, the disbelievers close their eyes and refuse to see. They see the shadows move every single day, from the moment they wake until the moment they sleep, and still they deny the One who set all of this in motion. If a shadow — a mere reflection of light — can submit so perfectly to its Lord, then how much more should the human being, who has been given intellect, free will, and the capacity to understand, submit to Allah willingly?
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause for a moment. Look around you. Look at the shadow of a tree swaying gently in the afternoon sun. Look at the shade of a mountain stretching across the valley at sunset. Every single one of these is a sign from your Lord, speaking to you in a language that needs no words. They are not just shadows — they are living proofs of Allah's greatness, moving in perfect harmony with His will. They prostrate to Him without question, without hesitation, without pride.
So what about you? You have been given a heart to feel, a mind to think, and a soul that longs for its Creator. Will you not also bow down to Allah in humility? Will you not submit to the One who created you, who sustains you, who knows what is in your heart? The shadows will continue their prostration until the Day of Judgment, but your time to choose is now. Do not let your pride prevent you from the very act that every creation — from the mightiest mountain to the smallest pebble — performs every single moment: submission to Allah.
Come to your Lord willingly, with love and humility, before the day comes when every knee will bow involuntarily, and it will be too late. The shadows bow because they have no choice. You have the choice — and what an honor that is. Choose wisely.
