Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- A'lamu bikum — Most Knowing of you; nothing about your condition is hidden from Him.
- Yarhamkum — He grants you mercy by guiding you to faith and righteous deeds.
- Yu'adhdhibkum — He punishes you by leaving you upon disbelief and causing you to die in that state.
- Wakīlan — A guardian, trustee, or one entrusted with managing people's affairs and holding them accountable for their deeds.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O people, your Lord is the One Who knows you completely — your innermost thoughts, your intentions, and the true state of your hearts. Nothing about you escapes His knowledge. If He wills, He showers you with His mercy by granting you the success to believe in Him, follow His messengers, and perform righteous deeds. And if He wills, He punishes you by leaving you to persist in disbelief and causing you to die upon that state, which leads to His just chastisement.
And O Prophet Muhammad — We have not sent you as a guardian over them, nor as one who has authority to compel them to believe, to prevent them from disbelief, or to hold them accountable for their actions. Your task is only to convey the message clearly, to call them to the straight path, and to show them the way. The matter of guidance and accountability rests entirely with Allah alone.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound message of hope and a gentle warning. On one hand, it tells us that Allah's mercy is vast and entirely within His will — He can guide anyone He wishes, no matter how far they have strayed. This should fill every believer with optimism when calling others to Islam, for we are not responsible for the outcomes; we are only responsible for conveying the truth with sincerity and kindness. On the other hand, it reminds us that Allah's justice is real, and that persisting in disbelief has consequences. Yet the beauty of this verse is that it relieves us of unnecessary burden — we are not judges over people, nor are we tasked with forcing faith into hearts. Our role is beautiful and simple: to share the light of the Quran and the Sunnah with wisdom and gentle persuasion, and to leave the rest to the One Who knows all. So let this verse inspire you to be a caller to truth with a compassionate heart, trusting that Allah's knowledge and mercy encompass everything.
