Surah Al-Isra — Verse 53

Word Meanings:

• Yanzaghu (يَنزَغُ): To provoke, incite, or stir up discord and corruption between people, like a spark that ignites a fire.
• Adūwwan mubīn (عَدُوًّا مُّبِينًا): An enemy whose enmity is clear, evident, and undeniable.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, tell My believing servants to speak the best of words and to choose the finest expressions when they converse with others—especially when dealing with those who oppose them or harm them. Instead of responding with harshness or insults, they should reply with kindness, gentleness, and wisdom, saying what is most beneficial and most beautiful in speech.

This command came in a context where the believers were being harmed and provoked by the disbelievers. The believers complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) about this mistreatment, and Allah revealed this guidance: do not repay evil with evil, but rather respond with what is better. Say to them words of goodness, such as praying for their guidance, and avoid engaging in bitter arguments or harsh exchanges.

Why this instruction? Because when people exchange harsh words, the Shaytan (Satan) seizes the opportunity to slip in between them, igniting the flames of hatred, enmity, and conflict. He thrives on discord and works tirelessly to corrupt relationships and spread division. A single careless word can escalate into a full-blown feud, and Satan is the one who fans those flames.

Indeed, Satan has been—and always will be—a clear and open enemy to mankind. His enmity is not hidden or ambiguous; it is manifest and undeniable. From the time of Adam (peace be upon him) until the end of time, his sole mission is to mislead humanity and destroy their harmony. Therefore, the believer must be ever vigilant, guarding their tongue and their heart against his whispers.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful lesson in self-control and emotional intelligence. Islam teaches us that our words are not merely sounds—they are seeds that either grow into gardens of peace or thorns of conflict. When you choose the better word, you are not only protecting yourself from sin, but you are also building bridges, softening hearts, and closing the doors through which Satan enters.

Imagine the power of a kind response in the face of provocation. It disarms the aggressor, confuses the troublemaker, and elevates your own rank in the sight of Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was described in the Qur'an as being of "tremendous character," and this verse is a direct call for every believer to emulate that noble example.

So, dear believer, let your tongue be a source of mercy, not a weapon of harm. Speak the best, even when it is difficult. And remember: every time you hold back a harsh word and replace it with a good one, you are not only defeating Satan in that moment—you are drawing closer to the Most Merciful, who loves those who are gentle and forgiving.
