Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • لِشَيْءٍ (for anything): Refers to any matter or affair one intends to undertake.
  • غَدًا (tomorrow): Means in the future, not necessarily the very next day; it encompasses any coming time.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse carries a profound lesson in humility and reliance upon Allah. Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) with a command that extends to every believer until the end of time: never assert with absolute certainty that you will do something in the future without linking your intention to the will of Allah.

The occasion of revelation is instructive. When the Prophet was asked about the People of the Cave, the soul, and Dhul-Qarnayn, he replied, "Tomorrow I will inform you," without adding "if Allah wills." The revelation was delayed for fifteen days, and this verse was revealed to teach the eternal lesson: human beings have no knowledge of what tomorrow holds, and no one can guarantee their ability to fulfill any plan except by Allah's permission.

The verse commands the believer to say, "In sha' Allah" (if Allah wills) when speaking of future intentions. This is not merely a linguistic formality but a profound acknowledgment that all affairs are in Allah's hands. The One who controls the heavens and the earth alone knows whether you will wake up tomorrow, whether circumstances will permit your plan, and whether your life will extend to that moment.

Furthermore, the verse instructs: if you forget to say this and later remember, then return to the remembrance of Allah, saying, "In sha' Allah." The scholars explain that mentioning Allah erases forgetfulness, for the heart that is connected to its Lord is protected from negligence.

Finally, the verse concludes with the believer's hopeful supplication: "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this in right conduct." This teaches us that when we face uncertainty about the future, we should turn to Allah in prayer, asking Him to guide us to the best course of action and to grant us success in what pleases Him.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear believer, this verse is a treasure of divine wisdom. It cures the soul from arrogance and self-reliance, teaching us that we are weak creatures dependent on the mercy of our Creator every single moment. When you say "In sha' Allah," you are not merely uttering words — you are declaring your faith that Allah's will prevails over all plans, that His knowledge encompasses all affairs, and that your trust is in Him alone.

This beautiful habit brings immense blessings: it protects you from disappointment when plans change, it keeps your heart humble and connected to Allah throughout your day, and it transforms your ordinary speech into an act of remembrance and worship. How fortunate is the one who trains their tongue to constantly acknowledge Allah's sovereignty over the future!

Let this verse be a light upon your path. Whenever you plan, whenever you promise, whenever you look toward tomorrow, remember: the future belongs to Allah, and the wise believer enters it with the key of "In sha' Allah."

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-Kahf

And similarly, We caused them to be found that they [who found them] would know that the promise of Allah is truth and that of the Hour there is no doubt. [That was] when they disputed among themselves about their affair and [then] said, "Construct over them a structure. Their Lord is most knowing about them." Said those who prevailed in the matter, "We will surely take [for ourselves] over them a masjid."
They will say there were three, the fourth of them being their dog; and they will say there were five, the sixth of them being their dog - guessing at the unseen; and they will say there were seven, and the eighth of them was their dog. Say, [O Muhammad], "My Lord is most knowing of their number. None knows them except a few. So do not argue about them except with an obvious argument and do not inquire about them among [the speculators] from anyone."
And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow,"
Except [when adding], "If Allah wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct."
And they remained in their cave for three hundred years and exceeded by nine.
