Explanation of the Verse:
This verse completes the previous command where Allah instructed His Prophet ﷺ not to say about any matter, "I will do that tomorrow," without adding the condition of Allah's will. Here, Allah provides the exception: you may only affirm such a statement if you connect it to His will by saying, "If Allah wills" (In sha' Allah).
Then Allah teaches a beautiful and practical remedy for forgetfulness: "And remember your Lord when you forget." If you forget to say "In sha' Allah" at the moment of making a promise or planning for the future, then the moment you remember, say it — and by doing so, you are remembering Allah, and the remembrance of Allah dispels forgetfulness and brings clarity to the heart and mind. This is a profound mercy from Allah: He turns our very forgetfulness into an opportunity for dhikr (remembrance), which elevates our rank and draws us closer to Him.
Finally, Allah instructs the believer to say: "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to nearer than this of right conduct." This is a humble admission of human limitation and a hopeful turn toward Allah. The believer acknowledges that their own planning and foresight are imperfect, and so they ask Allah to guide them to what is even better and more correct than what they had intended. The reference to "this" points to the correction or the realization that occurred after forgetting — meaning, even when we err or forget, we should hope that Allah will turn that into a means of greater guidance and success.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse is a treasure of practical wisdom for your daily life. It teaches you to live with humility before Allah, never relying solely on your own plans and abilities, but always anchoring them in the will of your Lord. Saying "In sha' Allah" is not merely a cultural phrase — it is an act of worship that acknowledges Allah's absolute control over all affairs, and it protects you from arrogance and self-reliance.
Moreover, when you forget, do not despair or feel defeated. Allah has given you a lifeline: remember Him, and He will remember you. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever remembers his Lord in times of ease, Allah will remember him in times of hardship." So turn every moment of forgetfulness into a moment of connection with your Creator.
And when you face uncertainty about the future, let your tongue utter: "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer to right conduct." This is the language of hope and trust — the language of a heart that knows its Lord is the Best of Planners, and that whatever Allah chooses for you is always better than what you would have chosen for yourself.
So, dear reader, make this verse a companion in your daily affairs. Plan, strive, and work — but always with the remembrance of Allah on your lips and trust in His guidance in your heart. For indeed, the one who places their trust in Allah, Allah is sufficient for them, and He will guide them to paths of light and success beyond their imagination.
